Saskatchewan to have 100% high speed Net

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- An incredible 28,000,000 Canadians were online — that’s 84.3% of the population – as of March this year.

That might lead one to think everyone, everywhere in the country, has access to a high-speed connection.

But that’s not the case and Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall says 100% high speed coverage is the Saskatchewan version of the last spike in the Canadian Pacific Railway, “and an important investment in the rural areas to sustain and solidify economic growth”.

And the province will achieve that goal, “within three years as the result of a major investment,” continues the Saskatoon Homepage.

The upgrades will cost some $129 million through SaskTel, says Discover Moosejaw.

“In addition, SaskTel will be seeking grants from Industry and Northern Affairs to undertake a 15 point 3 million dollar capital program to expand cellular and high speed Internet to 29 First Nation communities,” according to  the Saskatoon Homepage.

I wonder if “high speed” is the Canadian version, or say the Japanese or Korean version (i.e. throttled 1-3Mbps DSL vs. 100Mbps+ fiber), if you want to talk about growth and stimulus.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

^ Most likely Cable or DSL speed. Mabey goverment backed WiFi over FM radio.
Hopefully better than the US’s version, iirc anything over 128kbps in an area code = highspeed coverage.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Canuck version of hi-speed: DSL, 10Mbps, 54.95 monthly, non-throttled, unlimited bandwidth usage, = Highspeed Extreme (urban areas). Non-urban: WiFi and Satellite servicing at speeds to range from 3 to 6 Mbps, access to cellular services where there used to be none. Dial-up in SK will become obsolete.

Prior to this, the fastest speeds were in urban areas at 5Mbps, $49.00 monthly, non-throttled, unlimited bandwidth usage. The slowest were remote First Nations on dial-up with 56KB modems. On a side note, SaskTel has never engaged in throttling or band width manipulation, I hope they continue that practice with this new service.

wait wait wait- you’re telling me, that there are people in this country that CAN’T download the new james bond movie (just released by coalition) or Eagle Eye (just released by HEFTY)?!?!! and they call this a first world country! bah!

  5. freeman Says:

You mean to tell me it’s taken 15 plus yrs to get what they promised at that time with money from our coffers they wasted then?
    And it’s still not fiber!

  6. Adam Says:

Readers Write: Looks like you got that off of eastlinks page.

Sasktel is a Cable-internet provider, like bell/sympatico, and Aliant (Now owned by bell anyways).

  7. Reader's Write Says:

Yes freeman, it’s meant to tell you it’s taken 15 plus yrs and yes it’s still not fiber. What’s your point? Err… maybe I should rephrase the question – would it make you happy if they spent more of “your coffer money” by putting in fiber? I mean, come on dude, the service is above and beyond what you would expect in other regions of Canada.
