Saskatchewan meteor rush on the way?

p2pnet news view | Cool:- Will it be like the Klondike gold rush.

Except it’d be in Alberta?

And prospectors won’t be looking for gold?

“Last month University of Calgary’s Rob Cardinal was looking for an asteroid, but ended up finding a comet,” said a p2pnet story.

It was slugged ‘Meteor fragments are Manna from Heaven‘ and went on that part of the meteor seen in blazing across the sky east of Red Deer, Alberta, and west of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, disintegrated, scattering fragments far and wide over parts of Canada.

U of C geologist Alan Hildebrand and graduate student Ellen Milley found pieces on land owned by Ian Mitchell in western Saskatchewan, aid the Edmonton Sun.

They’re worth $1 to $10 per gram and, “A head-sized rock could fetch up to $50,000,” said the story.

Arizona meteorite collector Robert Haag is offering $10,000 for the first one-kilogram chunk, says the CBC, going on:”The first piece that is found, I am immediately catching the first plane to Canada with a pocket full of money,” he’s quoted as stating.

Milley, who spotted the first remnant, calling it “a very big moment in a very short career,” won’t be claiming the $10,000 reward offered for the first piece of the meteorite, say the Edmonton Journal / Saskatoon StarPhoenix.

“We’re in it for the science,” she said.

Meanwhile, “Scientists hope to find much larger pieces, and Mitchell said he might sell those if people are willing to pay,” says the story, addin:

“Smaller fragments probably will be donated to universities and research groups, he said.

“Hildebrand said the race is on to find as many pieces as possible before the snow comes.”
