Elvis Costello show ‘tough viewing, even for fans’

“Yup. UK musicians Elton Costello and Elvis John (sorry, that should be Elton John and Elvis Costello) are about to regale we Canadians in a new CTV show. But don’t worry. After all, Costello is married to jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall, who’s Canadian and hails from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, BC, just up the road from p2pnet’s plush central headquarters.
“The 13-part “Canada-U.K. co-production,” Spectacle: Elvis Costello With … was conceived and developed in Canada, says the Canadian Press.
It’ll feature, “performances and in-depth discussions between Costello and some of the world’s most influential artists and personalities”.
Did Elton John jump ship somewhere along the way? Because he isn’t even mentioned in a considerably less than enthusiastic write-up of the show.
As an interviewer, “Costello is a great musician,” says the Hollywood Reporter item, quoted by Reuters.
The program has little direction and almost no flow, says the story.
Costello, “doesn’t exactly set things at ease,” it states, adding, “what should be a chatty, inside-rock gabfest rarely runs free, thanks to his overuse of cue cards and stiff stage presence (that is, when he’s not holding a guitar).
“It’s tough viewing, even for fans” and, “the real spectacle is the show itself, but not for the right reasons.”
