Sun releases MySQL 5.1

p2pnet news | Open Source:- Less than a year after buying buying Swedish open source database company MySQL AB for $1 billion, Sun Microsystems has announced the release of open source database MySQL 5.1.

Sun says MySQL 5.1 has new enterprise-class enhancements including »»»

  • Table and Index Partitioning – MySQL 5.1 supports five forms of horizontal data partitioning: range, hash, key, list, and composite (sub-partitioning). By partitioning table and index data, faster query response times can be achieved as only the relevant partitions of data need to be scanned, instead of the entire table or index, says Sun. “Further, various storage and other maintenance operations are made much easier and accomplished more quickly via partitioning,” it states.
  • Row-Based and Hybrid Replication – Two new replication options are now available in MySQL 5.1. Row-based replication replicates the data changes (rather than the actual SQL statements) between a master server and its slave servers, and hybrid replication uses either statement-based or row-based replication depending on the individual SQL operations.
  • Event Scheduler – This new tool allows developers and DBAs automatically schedule common recurring SQL-based tasks to execute on the database server. It provides greater support for database-specific tasks than is available through CRON in Linux or Unix(R) or the MicrosoftWindows task scheduler, according to the comopany.
  • New MySQL Query Analyzer – Available to premium MySQL Enterprise subscribers, Sun says it new MySQL Query Analyzer tool can, “dramatically improve the speed and uptime of MySQL database applications by monitoring query performance to accurately pinpoint and correct problem SQL code”.

MySQL 5.1 is available for hardware and software platforms including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SuSE Enterprise Linux Server, Microsoft Windows, Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS), Macintosh OS X, Free BSD, HP-UX, IBM AIX, IBM i5/OS, says Sun.

MySQL 5.1 GA release is available via three models »»»

  • MySQL Community Server – The freel open source version of Sun’s MySQL database. Licensed under the GPL, it’s targeted to a technical, do-it-yourself audience, who does not require commercial support or premium add-on services, says Sun.
  • MySQL Enterprise Server – Available as part of a MySQL Enterprise subscription, it’s for corporate IT users with subscribers receiving monthly rapid software updates and quarterly service packs with the latest fixes, along with access to proactive monitoring tools and 24×7 production technical support.
  • MySQL Embedded Server – The commercially-licensed version of the MySQL software allowing ISVs and OEMs to embed or bundle a high-speed, small-footprint database with their own products, without the free-distribution requirements of the GPL license.

One Response to “Sun releases MySQL 5.1”

MySQL creator: version 5.1 released with “fatal bugs”

    Quote 1:

“”We still have 20 known and tagged crashing and wrong result bugs in 5.1 [and] 35 more if we add the known crashing bugs from 5.0 that are likely to also be present in 5.1,” he wrote. “It’s of course impossible to get all issues fixed, but we should at least have tried to ensure that all issues important to a lot of MySQL developers and MySQL users should have been discussed, fixed and/or addressed in a public manner! We should also never have a single serious crashing/wrong data bug in a GA release.”"

    Quote 2:

“Despite the alleged friction between prominent MySQL developers and Sun management, Widenius contends that Sun was not responsible for the failures behind the 5.1 release. He blames Mårten Mickos, the senior vice president of Sun’s database group and former CEO of MySQL AB. According to Widenius, Mickos no longer treats quality as a priority and unilaterally chose a premature GA release date because “he needs something he can sell.” ”

“I would like to point out that the current release is not something that can be said to be fault of Sun. The decisions to do a GA release was solely been made by the MySQL management in Sun,” Widenius wrote. “We have changed the release model so that instead of focusing on quality and features our release is now defined by timeliness and features.”
