SP2 and Windows 2000

p2pnet.net News:- If you’re an enterprise running Windows 2000 or older and you think Microsoft will still look after you, you’ll probably have to think again.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is due out next month and it’ll have new memory-protection features, an activated firewall, Bluetooth 2.0 support and browser and e-mail security features, says Computer Weekly here. And there’s also a new Windows Media Player and DirectX.

However, "The commercial market often uses Windows 2000 Professional and Microsoft has not committed to providing similar functionality for this," the story quotes Gartner analysts as saying.

"Enterprises trying to skip XP should pressure Microsoft to release similar functionality for Windows 2000, but we expect anything it delivers for Windows 2000 to fall short of the features planned for XP."

SP2, which will be downloaded automatically into many PCs through the Windows Update service, "could break current applications, disrupt networking setups and prompt nontechnical users to make PC configuration decisions that may be beyond their grasp," warns Computerworld here.

Microsoft has urged developers and IT professionals to test the update, says the story.
