IWF backs down on Virgin Killer complaint
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- Britain’s Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has hurriedly reinstated a Wikipedia page containing an image of a young girl without any clothes.
It shows the cover of 1976 album by German heavy metal band Scorpions, released in 1976 and today judged by the organisation to be potentially illegal in the United Kingdom, as the Wikipedia admin site summed it up.
Virgin Media, Be Unlimited/O2/Telefonica, EasyNet/UK Online, PlusNet, Demon, and Opal were blocking access to the Wikipedia page, said p2pnet.
Now, “Following representations from Wikipedia, IWF invoked its Appeals Procedure and has given careful consideration to the issues involved in this case. The procedure is now complete and has confirmed that the image in question is potentially in breach of the Protection of Children Act 1978,” says the IWF in an online statement, going on »»»
However, the IWF Board has today (9 December 2008) considered these findings and the contextual issues involved in this specific case and, in light of the length of time the image has existed and its wide availability, the decision has been taken to remove this webpage from our list.
