Visual Studio Lite

p2pnet.net News:- Microsoft has finally figured out that professional programmers aren’t all there is to life and is making inexpensive, lean, ‘unpro’ pre-release builds of Visual Studio 2005 developer tools and SQL Server database available.

"Microsoft realizes that there are distinct needs for beginning hobbyists, enthusiasts, and students who want to get started programming with the .NET Framework," say Bill and the Boyz here.

Hence, MS "Express" products – "lightweight, easy-to-use, easy-to-learn tools for hobbyists, enthusiasts, and students who want to build dynamic Windows applications and Web sites".

Express Beta products comprise:

  • Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition, a lightweight tool for building dynamic Web sites and Web services
  • Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition, a streamlined programming tool for beginning programmers to learn how to build exciting Windows applications
  • Visual C# 2005 Express Edition, Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition, and Visual J# 2005 Express Edition, targeted programming tools for students and enthusiasts who wish to learn the fundamentals of computer science

Microsoft also ships SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, an entry-level database for hobbyists, enthusiasts, and students developers

But there’s no "Go Live" license: the beta is limited to "testing and evaluation only". And only the Visual Studio 2005 Team Architect Edition portion of the Team System is included with Beta 1.

"This contains the application modeling tools (formerly codenamed ‘Whitehorse’) in addition to the compilers, editors, and designers we colloquially refer to as Visual Studio Professional Edition," says spokesman Mark Cliggett.

"We will work to include the rest of the Team System suite in subsequent releases."
