Oz ISPs say No! to Rudd anti-Net plan

p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- Oz ISPs have told Australia’s Kevin Rudd government what to do with its Net censorship plans.

Rudd, et al, want to “filter” online traffic and block access to 10,000 sites they claim carry “illegal” content.

But the ISPs aren’t having any.

Australia’s largest provider flatly refused to take part in live trials of the system with the second largest committing, “only to a scaled-back trial,” said The Age.

Some 1,300 websites are already designated as undesirable by the Australian Communications and Media Authority as part of its self-appointed role as Net Censor, said p2pnet last month.

Under a Kevin Rudd government edict, the Australian Net Curtain, similar to China’s, means citizens will have to use to a ‘filter,’ whether they want it or not, said the story, adding, “Just in time for Christmas”.

“Responding to the rebuff by ISPs, Australia’s communications minister Stephen Conroy said the initial trials would not be ‘closed’ and involve no actual customers,” says the BBC, adding:

“Politicians for Australia’s Green party called on the government to abandon the filtering plan which has been widely criticised.

“Protests are expected on 13 December in Sydney and Melbourne calling for an end to the scheme.”

And we know who’ll be among them: members of the country’s newest political group – the Australian Sex Party.

“Have you heard about this new Australian Sex Party?” – asked Luke in a Reader’s Write, going on, “Interesting stuff. Check it out.”

We did and, “Tired of ‘hypocrites’ and ‘wowsers’ (an Australian slang term for an obtrusively puritanical person)?”” – asks Breaking Free, continuing »»»

The Sex Party hopes to save their nation from such people. The woman you see in this video is the party’s convenor, Fiona Patten, the head of the Eros Association, the national adult retail and entertainment lobby group.

What has triggered this new party line? Patten says the trigger has been the Australian government’s decision to place a mandatory filter on the Internet.

Will Australia soon boast a Kangaroo Kurtain? Will Bruce and Sheila have to move to America. Or maybe France?

Stay tuned. And while you wait »»»

Many wowsers here in Mexico as well. Good luck to you, Australians. If this filter becomes a reality it’ll be a dangerous precedent for all.
