Apple’s Tiger: 150 advances

p2pnet.net News:- Tiger, the fifth major version of Mac OS X, will be on the shelves sometime within the first half of next year, says Apple.

And it’ll have more than 150 "breakthrough" features including Dashboard, "a new way toaccess a new collection of accessory Widgets".

But, says Arlo Rose, Dashboard = Konfabulator, his $25 Mac app which also allows easy access to small programs such as the calculator, clock and calendar.

"It’s insulting, is what it is," Rose is quoted as saying in an SFGate story here. "They could have at least offered to work with us or to buy it."

Apple senior vp Phil Schiller says, "It’s not his stuff," according to the story. "What we’ve done is ours."

In the meanwhile, Tiger also includes:

  • Spotlight, a "revolutionary" find facility
  • A new version of Apple’s web browser with "instant access" to RSS feeds
  • A new version of Apple’s iChat instant messaging client with the industry’s first multi-person audio and video conferencing in a 3D interface

Spotlight finds any file, document or information created by any application on the Mac and enables users to instantly find just about anything – including emails, presentations, images, appointments and Microsoft Office documents – "then automatically organizes and displays the results by kind, time or people," promises Apple.

"Spotlight technology also powers Smart Folders in the Finder, Smart Mailboxes in Mail and Smart Groups in Address Book that work like Smart Playlists in iTunes to automatically keep a user’s information organized and updated."

OS X 10.4 will be available in the first half of 2005 for $129 (US).
