Canadian Idol, RIP
p2pnet news view TV | Music:- Good news for anyone who likes good music and intelligent television.
“Despite the disingenuous insistence of the show’s loyal judges that this season’s contenders were the ‘best ever’ — something they repeated like a yogic mantra at 15-minute intervals — anyone with a passing interest in pop music couldn’t help but wonder if their Kool-Aid had been spiked with hallucinogens.”"
That’s the third paragraph in a Toronto Star write-up on the fact Canadian Idol won’t be around next year.
“With a grating host (Ben Mulroney), shtick-prone correspondent (Jully Black), musical mentors from pop’s paleolithic era (Tom Jones, Anne Murray), Pantene Pro-V commercials disguised as creative content, and a male-dominated Top 10 that seemed hand-picked by squealy 11-year-olds more concerned with looks than vocal talent, the show had devolved into a virtual parody of the cutting-edge music competition it aspired to become only five years earlier.”
That’s the fourth.
According to the show’s producer, CTV, putting it together is costly, “and it is expecting a sharp drop in advertising revenue in 2009,” says the CBC, adding:
“The network is retaining the rights to the series, which officials said was not cancelled and could return to the airwaves in 2010.
“Suspending the show for a year will help the network preserve cash during the 2009 broadcast season, the organization stated. The network labelled the one-year plan as a ‘rest’ for the show.”
CTV says it’s retaining the rights to the series, but doesn’t explain why it’s bothering.
