Manoel de Oliveira: new book, aged 100!
p2pnet news view | Cool:- “Born on December 11, 1908, Portuguese film-maker Manoel de Oliveira began his career making silent movies,” says The Guardian, going on:
“Need we point out that he is, and has been for some time, the last surviving original practitioner of this form? In 1931, the year he made his first film, James Ramsay MacDonald was the British prime minister, Charlie Chaplin released City Lights, and construction was completed on the Empire State Building. He is OLD.”
He is indeed. But he’s not merely sitting around, gracefully watching his days slip away as he waits to see what’s on the other side of the Great Divide.
Instead, he’s publishing a very limited-edition volume of his poems and thoughts.
“There are philosophical writings on humanity or science, several poems, and even a story in which he recounts an episode from his childhood,” his publisher, Jose Manuel Lello, told Agence France-Presse, itself the oldest wire service
“It’s a compilation of texts that Manoel de Oliveira has written in recent years.”
Lello’s Editores is releasing 100 copies only of “One Hundred Years, One Hundred Texts” on Sunday in Oliveira’s hometown Porto, says the story.
