Canadian Idol leaves hundreds out of work
p2pnet news view TV | Music:- To the relief of hundreds of thousands of TV watchers, Canadian Idol is on its way out. But a tiny (relatively speaking) group of people will lament its disappearance.
They’re the people who kept it alive.
Six-hundred-and-fifty Idolaters will be thrown out of work now CTV has taken the decision to yank the show.
As the Toronto Star summed it up, “With a grating host (Ben Mulroney), shtick-prone correspondent (Jully Black), musical mentors from pop’s paleolithic era (Tom Jones, Anne Murray), Pantene Pro-V commercials disguised as creative content, and a male-dominated Top 10 that seemed hand-picked by squealy 11-year-olds more concerned with looks than vocal talent, the show had devolved into a virtual parody of the cutting-edge music competition it aspired to become only five years earlier.”
And that’s putting it kindly.
“Insight Productions, which produced the show for CTV, hired 650 production workers in numerous temporary jobs — from cameramen, writers and editors to production assistants, electricians and drivers — for Canadian Idol last summer, according to John Brunton, who runs Insight and was an executive producer on Idol,” says the Globe and Mail.
“A lot of people will have a very difficult time being absorbed by the production community,” the story has him saying.
But wait!
According to the story, CTV says Canadian Idiot is, “merely taking a rest” and “may return”.
Say it ain’t SO !!!!
But, “The Idol franchise has similarly taken a break in other countries, such as Germany and the Netherlands, only to return. TVA’s Star Académie, another Idol-like talent contest, is coming back in 2009 after several years off the air,” adds the storyl.
Mulroney is the eldest son of ex-Canadian prime minister Lyin’ Brian Mulroney.
