MySpace caves to Big 4 label command

p2pnet news view Advertising | Freedom | P2P:- Frequent poster Comeoncomcast has a special Christmas message from MySpace owner and Australian zillionaire Rupert Murdoch.

Addressed to MySpace member it says, in effect, “Up Yours!”

“MySpace is accusing Projectplaylist of Copyright Infringement and it has hit home,” says Comeoncomcast in an email:

“Here’s the Message from MySpace – ‘Widget From Your Profile Has Been Deleted’.”He goes on »»»

I am so angry.

They raided my profile, deleted my widget and without my knowing consent.

Which is illegal isnt it?

Says the Murdoch Missive »»»

Your Project Playlist widget has been removed from your profile in response to copyright complaints. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but it is absolutely imperative that MySpace respect the rights of copyright owners, artists and record labels. Isn’t Online Music Free? No,MySpace, Rhapsody, Napster, Imeem, Yahoo Music, Pandora, Last.FM all pay fees to the artist and record labels for the rights for you to play their music online. It may seem free to you, but if it’s legal, someone, is probably paying for you to hear the music.Don’t I Have the Right to Listen to Songs I Purchased on Amazon, MySpace, iTunes or on CD in My Project Playlist Player? No, buying the album or song does not give you the right to put the songs in your Project Playlist Player, or upload them to MySpace, or upload them to any file sharing service.

When will I be able to use a Project Playlist music player on MySpace again?

As soon as their legal situation is settled, and the artists are getting paid, MySpace will consider re-enabling the embedding of Project Playlist music players.

Where Do I Get Legal Playlists for My Profile?

Imeem, Last.FM, iLike, and MySpace Music are all good options.

Thanks for your understanding,

MySpace

But, says Comeoncomcast, “Imeem, Last.FM, iLike etc etc do the same thing PP does. Don’t they?”

They do.

“This could come across negatively because MySpace runs MySpace Music, a service that competes with Project Playlist,” says CNet News in something of an understatement, continuing:

“And that’s probably why the News Corp.-owned MySpace is making it very clear that it has blocked Project Playlist because of complaints from major music labels.”

You think?

Facebook had a similar command from Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG but, “refused to comply,”" says TechCrunch, adding:

“Facebook for their part are refusing to comment, as is Project Playlist. But our music industry sources are calling Facebook’s refusal to comply “irresponsible” and saying that a lawsuit is inevitable if Facebook doesn’t remove the application and widgets.

“It’s not clear Facebook is fully aware of what they’re stepping into (although the experience of Mark Zuckerberg’s friend Sean Parker, who is the founding President of Facebook and the cofounder of Napster, with labels should give them some indication). The labels aren’t screwing around, and their fury with Project Playlist, who they say have been stalling on a music licensing deal for months, is unchecked.

“Expect users to give Facebook a big thumbs up for staring down the labels. My question is, how far is Facebook willing to go to protect Project Playlist? The potential litigation exposure is massive.”

Stay tuned.

Is this the same Rupert Murdoch, former owner of DirectTV, the company which sued thousands of people just because they owned a smartcard reader?
