Share the wealth: VI
p2pnet news view MPAA | RIAA | P2P:- Today in the world of file sharing, we continue to get content from the the Big $ (Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG) as they blatantly lie to the public through their media minion, the Wall Street Journal.
We continue to be amused by their incomprehensible stupidity and inability to understand that we now live in a digital age.
In a show of ambivalence, the sharing community is now sharing, well, everything. And being as now is the time of Oscars, the community abounds with all the nominees, including ‘girly’ movies like Changeling.
This seems to be a testament towards the attitude of file sharing, that it’s ok. It’s like smoking pot, oOo, big deal.
So now the nominees are making the rounds, even movies that’ll never open in the US such as Resident Evil: Degeneration a killer cgi flick based on the game.
This movie could have opened in the US raking in big bucks. Instead, I got a 1080p rip via file sharing, and it’s a killer movie.
I think the majority of file sharing is to fill a void the MAFAII don’t understand. The game isn’t even released in the US yet.
Recently we have:
Appaloosa
Cass
Grand Torino (prerelease)
Pixar Shorts (unreleased)
Resident Evil: Degeneration (unreleased in US)
Quantum Of Solace
The Dark Knight
Max Payne
All but one of the movies above were distributed from the MAFIAA themselves to insiders, never mind what’s being distributed in HD, regardless of the file size — thank Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG.
It’s really not that difficult to enjoy file sharing. Why do you think the DVR was invented? I tape (digital capture), edit (rip out commercials) and convert (DivX) HD from cable and archive to watch when I want. The new seasons begin soon and I can automate much of this so I can watch Lost, commercial free, whenever I want, and not when they decide to broadcast it.
How is this behavior ‘devastating’? How is this not Fair Use?
Criminal! Walk the plank matey, arg!
So now they want to add insult to injury and get the ISPs involved in their draconian regime.
Making the ISP responsible for copyright infringement is the same as holding T-Mobile responsible for your phone call, or Exxon responsible for what you do with the gas you buy, or the electric company responsible for the electricity you use to grow marijuana.
Is this even possible? Yet they’re going to attempt it anyway.
They flout the 3 strike rule implemented in France, yet forget to tell everyone it was overruled by a higher court in the European Nation Court.
They cry wolf with numbers they fabricate, and lobby their scheme into place and then hail the ‘forward progress’. Stifling your privacy and civil rights, not to mention your constituional rights is not ‘forward progress’.
So, now the RIAA claims to have dropped mass lawsuits. Well, not according to Ray Beckerman in his blog. Noting over a dozen recent filings, one as recent as Monday, Dec 12, 2008.
According to Fair Use, you have the following rights as a consumer:
“The Register [of Copyrights] was right in 2003 to be ’skeptical’ of the merits of any fair use analysis that asserts that space-shifting or format-shifting is a noninfringing use. Similarly, creating a back-up copy of a music CD is not a non-infringing use.”
File sharing is a product of of the digital vacuum created by the immense business stupidity of the music and movie industries. It’s not the ‘root of all evil’, or the ‘devestator’ of industry. It exists, like the internet, and its not going away. Like it or not, use it or not, if you don’t stand for your own individual rights, you will lose them. They could serve you a lawsuit, whether you did anything or not.
Stand up to these vultures, regardless of what country you’re in. Night vision goggles? Criminal violations? Suing 12-year-olds? Grandparents!?
Learn how to file share without the MAFIAA looking over your shoulder.
Kazaa and bittorrents are only a drop in the bucket compared to other P2P protocols they have no clue exists.
There are probably more SFTP files shared than bittorrent, and how do they plan on having ISPs monitor direct linked P2P, how bout VPN? There attempts to coherce the ISPs into filtering will be a wasted effort, regardless of the outcome. We will just move to another protocol they can’t track.
Get a fucking grip MAFIAA, it’s just a song.
Happy holidays, ya’ll
