Barenaked Ladies do Hockey Night in Canada
p2pnet news view Music:- The CBC is looking for 49 Canadian tunes with which to regale US president-to-be Barack Obama, and p2pnet reckons Bob and Doug’s 12 Days of Christmas should be included.
OK, it wasn’t actually written here. But the lyrics were.
And why 49? The 49th Parallel. Get it? Yeh. Well. Anything to cash in on the glow.
Speaking of cashing in, there’s one other truly Canadian tune that should be included: the theme from Hockey Night in Canada. And Barenaked Ladies, still recovering from unwanted exposure on the part of Steve Page, is to perform a bluegrass version on TSN, tonight.
It’ll be featured during first intermission of the hockey game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames, says the Ottawa Citizen, going on:
“A video of the band performing the classic hockey song will air at 10 p.m. on TSN.”
Barenaked Ladies are the second “high-profile” Canadian band to, “re-record the iconic theme song to NHL broadcasts on TSN,” says CTV, adding:
“In October, Simple Plan recorded and performed their unique rock version of ‘The Hockey Theme’ in Montreal.”
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
Despite its popularity, The Theme almost became merely a theme, says http://www.hockeytheme.com.
Written in 1968 by Vancouver’s Dolores Claman, it was originally commissioned by the MacLaren advertising agency in Toronto, “who were looking for a powerful commercial jingle suitable for the big game of hockey,” says the site.
“Whether it’s a wedding or bar mitzvah, Saturday Night Live or Late Night with David Letterman… whether it’s from a hockey fan or not, this souvenir of Canadiana seems to go on forever.”
“Well… it’s been a whirlwind,” posted John Ciccone, ‘Publishing Copyright Administrator’ in June, going on
“Friday evening when the CBC announced that they were moving ahead with their contest to find a new theme song — obviously dropping the old one, we realized that we’d have to accept the fact that all that we’ve put up with, all that we’ve endured over the last lo-o-o-ong six years (yes, ’six’ years) was wasted.”
But his long and passionate post ends with the news The Theme won’t die, after all.
“CTV Inc. together with Copyright Music & Visuals today announced that CTV Inc. has acquired all rights to ‘The Hockey Theme’ in perpetuity, preserving the song’s legacy and ensuring it will be heard on national television for years to come,” he says, noting:
“In addition, CTV will utilize the song as part of its hockey coverage during the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.”
