Microsoft blames Zune crashes on Leap Year glitz
p2pnet news view Music | Mobiles:- “This is NOT a hoax, it is freaking reality,” says Macrat in a comment post to the p2pnet story that Microsoft Zune 30s were struck down in their thousands by the Z2K9 plague.
“Took mine to work after purchasing music off the flippin zune site last night and syncing without any idea that there was an issue,” he says, going on:
“Went to use at work this morning, and it froze like everybody else’s 30 gb. Purchased mine back in 2006 so the warrany is gone.
“I would really like to see how Microsoft is going to handle this.”
Now the company has admitted there’s been a universal phuk-up that’s down to a software bug, “related to the way the device handles a leap year,” says the New York Times.
Apparently, it says, the Zune was expecting 2008 to have 365 days, not 366.
Maybe it was getting confused with 2008 being a Leap Second year?
“The Zune meltdown is the latest setback in Microsoft’s troubled history with hardware,” says the NYT, adding:
“In 2006, after Microsoft released the Xbox 360, a video gaming console, untold numbers of console owners watched their machines break down because of a severe and widespread manufacturing flaw.
“During that console crisis, the company offered to fix faulty machines free of charge. Microsoft set aside a reported $1.1 billion for the repairs, a figure that suggested to industry analysts that the problem could affect a third of the 11.6 million 360s already in the hands of consumers.”
The story doesn’t say what, if anything, Microsoft plans to do for angry Zune customers.
We’ll tell you about it next year.

I’d be interested to know if this is caused by DRM. Because it certainly sounds like it was the culprit.

I’m surprised anyone even noticed a problem. Only two people own a 30 gig Zune and they published responses here.
