Out, RIAA MediaSentry. In, RIAA DtecNet.
p2pnet news view | RIAA News:- The fact Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG’s RIAA fired MediaSentry offers up all kinds of interesting possibilities, ie »»»
- With the RIAA out of the way, will various US states now prosecute it for operating illegally from within their boundaries?
- Will RIAA victims launch a class action against it, also naming the RIAA?
- As thecapn points out in Karl Bode’s dslreports story, “The RIAA is a US registered trade organization. Thus they are legally responsible for any US law violations that their ‘agents’ break.”
Can you think of any more?
Meanwhile, the RIAA, “recently announced they’d hashed out closed door deals with a number of ISPs to terminate the connections of customers who receive too many warning letters from the industry,” says dslreports, going on:
“Their existing system of DMCA letter generation relies on data collected by largely unaccountable and secretive organizations like BayTSP and Media Sentry.”
But now they’ve canned Media Sentry, “instead hiring DtecNet out of Copenhagen to monitor your BitTorrent bad habits.”
Sounds like other MAFIAA hired companies’ snake-oil, “like AudibleMagic and SafeMedia’s Closeau (yes that’s what that company’s anti-piracy solution is called, and it’s a lot like the bumbling detective it was named after),” says Doctor Four.
“Oh, and I expect blocklists to be updated to include all of DtecNet’s IP space.”
Potentially lethal screw-ups
In the first p2pnet report, “We’re told another online scalp-hunter, BayTSP, may ultimately replace MediaSentry, with DtecNet Software taking up the slack in the meanwhile,” we said, going on:
“The rumour was neither confirmed nor denied by SafeNet’s MediaSentry or BayTSP in response to p2pnet, and we hadn’t heard back from DtecNet at the time of writing.”But could it be DtecNet’s appointment will be permanent provided, of course, it doesn’ t commit as many potentially lethal screw-ups as MediaSentry?
Our story noted that three years ago the MPAA released Movie Studio Piracy software, “to allow parents – or anyone else who gets hold of it – to scour computers looking for content to delete on behalf of the movie studios”.
We went on »»»
The application was developed by DtecNet Software, a Danish software firm whose chairman is, by an amazing coincidence, Johan Schluter, a member of the Big Music record label cartel’s IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), and which also boasts the Danish Anti-Piracy Group’s Niels Bo Jorgensen as a board member.
And the ap seems to be about as @#$%ed up as the entertainment industry’s attempts to regain control of what used to be its customer base by suing them and trying to kill anything which looks even remotely like competition.
Now, “what worries me is the RIAA hired a company that is outside the US, from their angle its a good idea as they now have a hired spy that isnt bound by our laws,” posts Kearnstd in a dsl reports comment.
Meanwhile, iansltx predicts a, “rise in internet traffic on independent ISPs, the ones who haven’t signed on with the RIAA. Once people know where the agreements aren’t, they’ll move all their activities to those ISPs,” adding:
“That, or VPN companies will get a whole lot more business (not VPN4Life or AnchorFree, the other for-pay guys). Or both.
“As long as bits can be encrypted, there’s no way to watch a savvy internet user do whatever he/she is doing. If you use heuristics, you’ll get your fingers burned. I’d say “good luck RIAA, hope you don’t get sued into oblivion for a false positive” but I don’t have an ounce of sympathy for those folks.”
Stay tuned.

It’s interesting to note that that the RIAA have elected to use a “foreign” corporation, technically not liable under various US federal and state laws.
I expect to see more of the same type of dos activity as encrypted content becomes the norm rather than the current 22% of all p2p traffic. The principles of DTECNET have incurred the interest of the P2P community in the past.
For P2PNet readers to understand how complex IPFilter Lists need to be to keep DTECNET out of their machines, a little looksee into the past is required.

These guys seem to register more domain names than NSI. Thier RIPE entries are similarly scary.
Someone in that company knows what they are doing.
Although they appear to be focusing on Torrent traffic – they are fishing for ed2k via their main server running Lugundum set-up in Korea. Although they appear to have authoratitive servers in multiple EU countries and Im not sure yet, but I think China.
This is one company that has wired the P2P world.
I repeat my earlier strong assertion that KAD is a good option. And for true obfuscation behind a NAT router running KAD and MIRO or TVU simultaneously will result in a false alarm on their sniffer route tracking software.

unfortunately even if the foreign agency isn’t held responsible the RIAA as the perveyors of said agent could instead then be DIRECTLY held responsible. Just cause you use child labour in china by third party does that mean your company is not held responsible?
OH if thats the case perhaps i should look for a country that i can hire to carry out and wack riaa brass, after all they did it not me right, i’m not responsible.

I am curious where jurisdiction is involved. How could a Danish company offer evidence for alleged infringement in US? I agree with the other comments here, they are only shifting gears, the MAFIAA have absolutely no intentions of minimizing their destructive practices, and now plan on attempting to get the US ISP’s to do their dirty work with even flimsier (sp?) evidence.
No more legal wrangling, (like that made a big successful impact, zero victories, count em, zip!), no more requirement of ‘evidence’, as if they ever had any to begin with. So instead of actually having to use due process for a civil offense, they can just begin sending mass letters to ISPs for alleged copyright infringement with even less evidence than they had before, which was never enough to make their case to begin with.
I do not think the ISPs in Amerika are going to lie down for this. There are too many activist groups like the EFF that will protest enough for this new flim-flam technique to ever take hold. Cmon, really, this is just outright ignorant.
This could be compared to Exxon being liable for the bank you robbed because you used their petrol in the getaway car. Or the Bell liable for the threatening call you made over their phone lines, etc, etc, etc.

@ surfer
… and why do u think they call it “new world order”?
This is and has been their plan all along. If you think this is bad then just wait. ID cards to go from city to country and or to next town / city, same for within city, even block you off in few block area … while they travel all over policing it all. You’ll get ration of genetically engineered food, place to slave to the bone and grubby bed to sleep on, that’s it. Another Gaza.
If you think I’m kidding just look at what they do to third world countries. If you still not convinced then check out youtube, google video, liveleak and many others for:

new world order
… oh man, i could be here all day typing them out. Also watch what’s related too.
Posts are skyrocketing all over. Try looking at the increase in posts here P2Pnet … then Wikileaks, democracynow, theblackvault, projectcensored, dslreports, 1000’s of blogs and so on. Just look at all the posts here and figure out the big picture.
Look at big media and you can see over time what they are up to. They tell you outright what their plans are, how they jump from one to another situation, circumvent each action we do … right in front of your face!
The point is to wake up and smell the coffee … then connect the dots.
Just as a test: take a full wall [8 by 12 ft] start with just headings of stories at 12 point font, paste each one or only important ones and see how they relate to each other. You’ll soon see which direction they are going. If not keep going till you do
enjoy and never fear, don’t give them the satisfaction
