Should p2pnet stay? Or should it go?

p2pnet news view | P2P:- When p2pnet started, there were very few sites regularly and consistently highlighting the attacks by the corporate entertainment cartels on their own customers. And the lamescream media were incapable of doing anything other than parroting the corporate party lines.

I post on a fairly wide range of topics, but the RIAA and MPAA,  together with what they get up to with special reference to polluting childrens’ minds, are my main focus, along with issues centring on freedom of speech.

But I’m now into my sixth year online (and 67th year off ;) ) and I’m wondering if p2pnet hasn’t served its purpose?

In 2002, when p2pnet first went up, and for two or three years after that, there wasn’t a whole lot on- or offline.

That kept things hopping, here.

These days, though, the big sites with their big staffs are on it 24/7 and I honestly wonder if p2pnet hasn’t become superfluous.

Not only but also, I feel I’m increasingly preaching to the choir and I don’t have the technical or financial resources to increase p2pnet’s reach.

What do you think?  Should I keep going and if I do,  should I switch direction? If so, what needs to be changed?

Or should I just chuck it in and leave it to the younger people and new blogs and sites?

I’d really appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

Please leave a comment post, or contact me directly at p2pnet @ shaw dot ca.

Cheers! And thanks. And all the best …
Jon

  1. Reader's Write Says:

Personally Id rather read independent canadian news even if it is second hand sometimes or slightly behind a good writer like yourself should continue!

Click banners 20+ times or throw him a donation. Jon deserves it.

Suggestion: keep sharing articles from up and coming writers or independent bloggers.

  2. surfer Says:

I can only speak personally, but this site is a compilation of over a dozen other links I have to get similiar information. I find p2pnet invaluable to find information that sometimes shows up elsewhere, sometimes not.

    imho, STAY.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

I love the site and I think you are great Jon. It seriously pains me to say this, but maybe you are right. There is very little you are providing that isn’t already available. It’s change which is hard, and it’s your recent life’s work, which is also hard to give up. Nevertheless it seems like the only logical and reasonable thing to do. I know you’ve never made any money off of it. You are still dealing with 2? lawsuits, You have to get up first thing in the morning and check dozens of news sites all day just to try to stay up with everyone else. You miss out on time with your daughter, you stress about finances every month, you are under appreciated, and deal with crap from flamers day in and day out.

Personally, I’d love to see you continue a personal blog with random thoughts and musings, but I think the news site has lost much of it’s initial value and appeal.

    Sry :(

  4. Jon Says:

^^ No need to be sorry. This is exactly what I was hoping for: an honest opinion.

    Cheers!

  5. Henry Emrich Says:

    Jon:
I gotta second Surfer’s view here (strangely):
As regards p2p/copyright-related news, the main sites I watch are this one, Torrentfreak, boycot-riaa.com (although they’re slipping), and Zeropaid. The same stuff tends to crop up on these sites at similar intervals — p2pnet and Torrentfreak are usually way ahead, with Zeropaid mentioning stuff about a week later, and Boycott-riaa mostly not mentioning stuff at all anymore.

All in all, your site is great, but I have a few suggestions that might appeal to the readers here:

    1. A list of resources and info related to the history (and controversies) of copyright law as it now stands — possibly link to the html version of Lessig’s book “Free Culture” — which I know really woke ME up to some of this stuff. Also http://www.questioncopyright.org (although of late it’s become rather sparsely updated.) Can anybody else suggest some other stuff?

    2. Podcasting: there are several free hosting services out there now (admittedly, some of them insert advertising, but you’re not adverse to ads if they’re relatively unobtrusive).

    3. Revive the “music” aspect — where you plug different groups.

I don’t think p2pnet has “served it’s purpose” (past-tense). Speaking for myself — and doubtless at least a few others here — your efforts have really helped me to change my viewpoint on a significant amount of stuff.

(Plus, I was exposed to that “badger badger badger” thing….messed with my head!)

  6. Logan Says:

Jon, I find your blog here in P2P.net invaluable as it’s usually a couple of days ahead of other news sites in regards to the RIAA and their games. The only other site I use is Afterdawn.com as it too covers the music and movie games. If you were to shut down there would be a, in my opinion, vacuum in the information process. I do understand that it is tiring and there are other sites out there that are covering the same thing in most cases, but you also give a unique perspective to the news stories and that is a Canadian one, wherein most of the other sites are American or other nationalities. You not only cover the American news but the Canadian as well and to me that makes you a site worth keeping.

  7. surfer Says:

    some suggestions, per Henry [req]…

  8. Reader's Write Says:

I would surely miss p2pnet if it were not here. I’m sure there’s lots of others who’d say the same. I like reading reading from an independent site, and have enjoyed yours for years.

  9. Dreddnik Says:

    I’m with Surfer and Henry.

Perhaps this stuff can be found elsewhere, But it’s ALL here, and usually before it hits the other sites.
I always start here, and Boycott-RIAA.

I’d much rather see you stay.

  10. Bios Element Says:

Don’t ya even think about going. I can’t think of a better site for all the p2p news.

  11. Free Thinker Says:

    Stay. Definitely stay.

While other sites might cover this subject, no-one tells it like it is like you do. You really expose this shit for what it is in ways that I don’t see anywhere else.

The only reason I can see for quitting is perhaps because you are 67 and might want to take things easy now and disconnect from the stresses of life as much as possible and that would be fair enough. You’ve already done the world a favour by setting up this site and don’t owe anyone anything.

If you don’t want to do this full time or at all any more, perhaps you can enlist someone younger with similar views to your own and help them to cover this subject in a similar way to how you do?

The nearest person I can think of is Charlie Demerjian of The Inquirer. He covers corruption in the tech world in a similar vein to how you cover this one – it was he and only he who laid bare the nvidia bad chips scandal and even cut up a brand new MacBook to prove his point! This man is not afraid a of a confrontation with corrupt entities, I tell you.

Here’s a link to Charlie’s complete coverage and is contactable from one of his articles via a web form. I also have his email address, but won’t post it here because of the spam threat. I’ll email it to you if you want it.

    http://www.theinquirer.net/category/friction/charlie-vs-nvidia

Here’s another demonstrating his style of coverage (the cut-up MacBook article):

    http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/921/1049921/inquirer-confirms-apple-macbook-pros-have-nvidia-bad-bump-material

I know we’ve managed to piss each other off royally several times with differing views etc (ok, I’m not perfect either, hehe :) ), but ultimately we are on the same side and I wish you all the best. I would rather you keep exposing the dross, the corruption and the lies put out by Big Media, the governments etc, if possible, or enlist someone who can carry on the good fight.

  12. rocksoccer Says:

wow, you are over 60 years old? I am a regular reader of your site, although I dont talk too much. It is great to hear some alternative voices here. Although most of the stories are from USA and Canada, I need to thank you for including many good stories about China. You know in that country many people are scared to talk about some topics, especially in the mainstream medias.

I hope you can carry on with p2pnet. Hopefully, more parents will show some of good stories here to their young children, and make the next generation what is right and what is wrong. The world should be controlled by the people just because they have money. Everybody shares the world.

    Good luck on p2pnet….

  13. Comeoncomcast Says:

    Stay Jon

No rest for the Wicked and the demented Music&Movie Industry

  14. Simon Mills Says:

Personally, I don’t think you really need to increase your reach. You have a very loyal audience that reads and comments regularly. I very much appreciate the canadian touch that you put into this site that no other site of this nature has.

As for sugestions, I would stick to your bread and butter (file sharing, RIAA, MPAA, DRM, Compyright etc..) because that is what people are here for and this one of the few places that covers these topics in length.

The thing I like most is the personal feel of the site and the canadian twist, both of which are very hard to find.

I say keep going, we appreciate it and will always be here as long as you are here

  15. Eric Says:

I need a source for relatively objective news regarding filesharing and the evil deeds of corporations, and this is it.

If you weren’t doing this, I would probably have to start my own webproject, and I simply don’t have that kind of time.

  16. Lamescream Media Guy Says:

You want to increase your reach? The New York Daily News picked you up – http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Liskula%20Cohen

    I’d say that’s a pretty good stretch. ;)

  17. nonym Says:

I’d love to see a scaled-back p2pnet that goes back to its roots. No more articles about celebrities and macworld, no more articles that just quote other articles from other sites or the p2pnet archives, with the addition of few original sentences. Instead convert this into a true blog, write two, three good pieces a week and just dump a bunch of delicious links to all the other good stuff that’s on Torentfreak and similar sites every day.

It’s sorta like Slyck vs. Zeropaid I guess, and I’d prefer Slyck’s sparse coverage but invaluable link section over those shoddy rewrittten articles on Zeropaid every day.

Jon, you’ve often said you need to do those celebrity-laden linkbaiting stories in order to get a few extra readers from Google so you can survive on the site’s income alone, but I’ve always wondered if that’s not a catch-22. You need to spend more time on writing garbage (sorry, some of it was garbage) because you don’t have any other time for other jobs.

I’d love to see you try out something else as a day job, and just blog about the stuff you have fun with, and frankly you are the best at.

I know, probably not the advice you want to hear, but you asked …

  18. Paulus Says:

I would suggest that you will find some of the other sites in much the same situation, although they might not admit it.

On top of that, most of them have gone downhill to some extent while p2pnet has managed to keep its station and to have actually improved, especially over the last 2 years.

I would not worry too much. I still come here and I am very picky.

  19. Jon Says:

    Hi all:

This is good. And really helpful. Believe me, I’m paying attention.

    Cheers!
    Jon

  20. Ottawa Gal Says:

    ay?
    You thinking of retiring?
    Only 67?
pffft you got at least 7 more “good” years left in you :p

Or slow down a bit if you’re tired. You do put a lot out for a one man show, compared to other sites referenced in this topic that only keep up your pace due to a dozen or so who contribute.

Who would replace you? I don’t think anyone else says it like you do. Or exposes it like you do. No one.

If you semi-retire, give us 12 weeks advanced notice so you can find (put the word out for) a few contributors to keep up your pace.
If you need a break, put an article out saying your taking time off and need a few contributors.
If you just need to slow down, Get Bell internet! They’ll be more than willing to throttle your pace down (and charge you for slowing you down).
If you’re closing shop to retire in your luxury mansion on your tax haven island, then GO. JUST LEAVE… But you’ll be back ;) Its in your blood. Even you gave me a taste of that…

So no rest for the wicked I say.

But what do I know. Maybe I would be looking at slowing down if I was in your shoes. I don’t think you have it in you to completely stop. Do you? Hmmm…

  21. Devil's Advocate Says:

There’s probably little point asking what WE want you to do.
The fact that we’re “here” is a statement in itself.

Since this is not the first time you have expressed doubts about continuing with this site, the only real and contructive feedback I can think of to offer you would actually be a few simple questions you should ask yourself…

    1) What do YOU want to do?
    2) Is p2pnet.net satifying YOUR desires?
    3) What direction do YOU want the site to follow?
    4) Do YOU still want to keep going?

  22. Jon Says:

“this is not the first time you have expressed doubts about continuing with this site …”

Yup. But before, it looked like I wasn’t going to have any choice whereas this time, it’s me wondering where to go next.

Says Ottawa Gal, “Its in your blood.”

    I guess it is.

I hope I’m doing one thing if nothing else – helping to show people because we can communicate with each other anywhere, any time, we’re no longer mindless drones at the mercy of the companies and their mindless drones. heh. We can, and do, run rings around them and their BS PR.

But there have to be changes, and you guys are giving me ideas about what, and where, they need to be.

    Cheers! And thanks again ….

  23. ZDN Says:

Jon, in my opinion sites such as yours are absolutely needed NOW more than ever. As is blatantly obvious, the establishment continues to creep in the direction of bigger government at the expense of our civil liberties. I see the internet as the last semi-free line of communication in an ever more restricted and censored land scape of corporate domination (Fascism).

However, one can only do the same thing for so long and if you’re getting tired of the battle, then maybe it’s time to change. As far as changing direction, my advice might be to set your sites a bit higher and look deeper into who pulls the string and what their reasons are.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

  24. scott Says:

I can honestly say this is one of the few sites I visit daily. I enjoy your take on the many things you write about. As to your relevance, I have more than a couple times recently seen the big “mega staffed” websites list you as the source of a story or event. That in and of itself should tell you to keep going. (by the way, this American has learned alot about Canada in the process too!)

  25. CHRoNoSS Says:

here is an idea Jon, give a younger person a job taking over a bit for ya , of course you get final say on the articles and it would give you some more time to enjoy yourself.
Many of us enjoy your articles and i would hate to see you go after a win legally speaking , i bet that was hard to deal with stress wise.

I have noticed also that groklaw.net suddenly has shifted away form reporting too.
I am getting nervous whats really happening here.

Ya can’t post anything meaningful at dslreports with the kinda people there, so slowly we are losing voice again.
Well i have decided to come out of retirement myself.

and if you or any site like this would or need some volunteers let me know, i am sure we can help ya out Jon. YOU after all have opened many eyes and kept many people informed for a long time.

  26. Gym_ Says:

WTF would ya want to change the place for or not do it anymore..
i read every artical of any intrest here and think ya do a bang up job..
    cheers from Australia and thanks
    Gym_

  27. Dorothy Says:

I like the personal touch shown in your stories, and your sense of humour, as well as the integrity you display. There may be many other bloggers around with these characteristics, but I kind of doubt it. Your site also saves me time by compiling news from different sources, and I value that.

However, what really matters is your answers to the questions Devil’s Advocate poses above (I am not asking you to make your answers public). What do you want to do, and what is best for you and your family?

  28. Jon Says:

CHRoNoSS and others — I’ve asked for volunteer help several times and had quite a few responses. But promises notwithstanding, not one person followed through.

But I understand why. This isn’t a business site and there are no rewards, other than reaching a lively and very intelligent bunch of readers from around the world. It’s hard work.

But that isn’t to say there aren’t regular contributors. Obviously, there are. And having said that, if you’re interested in contributing, especially if you have a technical bent, I’d love to hear from you. Just as important, I’d also like to find someone who can help out on the editorial end – like keeping p2pnet up during the hours I’m not around.

Also, something that’s missing is write-ups on movies and shows. Any time you go to a flick or see a band, think about whether or not you might like to do a review. That’d be good.

AND – I’d love to have a daily cartoon focusing on a relevant topic.

Also, videos would be good. :)

There’s a lot of stuff that could go here, especially if people understand this is a site which can be shared.

So thanks yet again. And please keep the thoughts coming.

    Cheers!

  29. Reader's Write Says:

Sure you’re preaching to the choir. Ever consider how we became the choir?

Face it, there are not that many sites that are ad independent in where by the majors don’t get a toe hold in to influence the tone of articles. While you may have ads, they are not to the point of holding the line in the form of muzzling what you have to say.

I’ve been with you a good many years now it seems. I prefer the method you have to submit comments, even though I know it takes a lot more doing in spam filtering etc in order to have an anonymous type submission. Many sites I go to, I won’t comment because I can not do it in this manner without having to identify myself. In this day and age of datamining, I find more and more I dislike strongly having to do os. So those sites never get my comments nor thoughts because of their fairly standard practice of everyone having to have some sort of label/identification in order to participate.

I can find most of the news you cover everyday. What I can not find that is solely found here, is editorial and opinion pieces. Those are what you shine at and do the best with. If there were anything I would personally change it would be the spoof articles of satire. Other than that I have nothing in my mind that would rate a change.

I have this site as my home page for a reason. I love what I read here of the goings on and it has opened my mind to many things that before were hidden by the complicit news media.

Keep on with the good fight Jon, it’s worth it.

  30. Reader's Write Says:

One thing I have not seen mentioned is you graphics are always good and some of them are amazing. No other site has them or anything like them.

  31. Andy Says:

I think you should scale back the effort you put in; perhaps to one tenth. It seems like the site is consuming you / defining you. Post seminal and pivotal articles, and reflect on trends and battles, but don’t feel you have to post every day, if nothing’s new. Keep the site and the community active until Emma can take over ;-)

  32. free1 Says:

    Only 67? LOL … you’re still a young fart :D
Everyone needs to take stock of their life every so often. The older and wiser one gets the more it happens.
You probably have clear fresh air, same for food, good home, and most of all good family. Can’t ask for much more.
Everyone who visits here will still survive if you take a break or few. You probably need these breaks more since you have a family, a young highly inquisitive mind [Emma] and your wife as well. Need to see more of the island too.

Some pretty good ideas here but I’ve leaned a long time ago never keep all your eggs in one basket so I wonder if you have thought of Adding a donations button to your main page, basics like P2PNET t-shirts and mugs? Some of the graphics you do or get are excellent for them and they spread the word too.

You can always diversify by reporting on your local news [stuff that's not usually covered], culture, flora & fauna, write a book or few, whatever suits you. But the rule is: never stop your bread and butter until you have something else that’s fully operational and time proven to replace the older. You can expand, move, shift and change but never forget your roots so you can go back to them if need be.

Never mind the big sites, you have something unique which they can only dream of. AND … You get to be your own boss, ruler and king all in one. There are millions of corporate flunkies that would love to have your setup but can only talk about it or dream of it. We are in a time where this website is essential to keep letting the “sheeple” know we haven’t given up or on them.

Most of all get some sun and color … you look a little gray. Oh that’s the pic

    Enjoy
BTW: if i didn’t have all the things on my plate that i do i’d be happy to help.

  33. sushant Says:

pleeeeease do not quit.. i love reading p2p.net. I mainly read your RIAA related news, and I think majority of your readers come here for that. If you want to slow down, just keep few sections that consist of most of the traffic, but please don’t stop completely. Atleast keep the RIAA section running.

    take care

  34. Jay Says:

Keep the site going. I check it out at least a couple times a day. Most the time I find out about something here before I see it on other sites. Mainly cause I do visit here first.

Keep it up Jon and happy new year

    -From a fellow VI slander

  35. Just my two cents Says:

    Jon,

I know many people have voiced this, but I must say that I do feel that your site has has and still has an important place on the web.

I am an US citizen located in Tokyo, Japan, and actually am away from a lot of the junk going on in North America, and find the news that you report interesting and informative on what is happening in the US and Canada.

P2Pnet is one of the few sites, which I have constantly view across my last 3 jobs, and it would be a shame to see it go.

As for the trolls and shrills that occasionally plague the site, due to the nature of this site, I know that you can often be stressed from comments by ill-mannered people, who only interest is to serve their “evil sith lord” :) , or just anger other people in the comments section. But Always remember, as long as this site is “yours” and not run by an organization, you have the right to post what ever you like, and rejects comments from whoever you feel, does not contribute to the article. Maybe in the future, your choices may turn away some of your readers, but as long as they are “your” choices, then they would have been worthwhile.

I think that you can safely say that this site has been and will continue to be part of your legacy to your daughter- a legacy that any child can surely be proud of.

    Just my two cents

  36. bh Says:

You know, you’re one of my forst 3 reads in the morning. You cover some great niche topics nobody else is touching.

Slap a donation link up here so I know where to go – it’s time I sent one in :)

  37. bh Says:

bah – s/forst/first/ in that previous msg.

  38. Rafael Venegas Says:

Retirement sucks for retirees, for society and for the economy. People should work all their lives even if at a lower pace or a different, easier job. At 67 today, a person is young and can still accomplish a great deal, especially if working on a keyboard, from home. Your contribution to music has been and will continue to be invaluable and needed. Just keep it up as long as you can. Good luck.

  39. Reader's Write Says:

    Stay. No discussion possible.

    I wouldn’t know. ;)

    Cheers!

  43. dasman Says:

You provide a valuable service. You should stay.

  44. Reader's Write Says:

Who else is going to kick em in the nuts. Ha Ha. go get em Jon.

  45. Ryan Scott Scheel Says:

I think you should stay. If you need inspiration, check some of your past works.

  46. Devil's Advocate Says:

    Jon,

I’d like to echo a statement made by ZDN:
“Jon, in my opinion sites such as yours are absolutely needed NOW more than ever…”

We are definitely going through THE time where we need as many of the voices reflected in your site as possible.

Whether you think you may have “reached a limit” with P2Pnet or not, it is vitally important that P2Pnet and all sites of similar “philosophy” continue (if at all do-able) to help these voices accumulate and keep the Corporate Machine in check!

Had these voices not had a venue, we may certainly be living different lives right now.
Corporate interests were really starting to thrive before the Internet Movement, as they already owned all other forms of viable media. Because of sites like P2Pnet, the Machine in is a state of “regroup”, as it has lost the complete control of information it used to have.

Corporate interests would like nothing better than to see all the sites like yours simply go away.
As long as they don’t, we have a glowing chance!

No, Jon, P2Pnet.net has NOT “served its purpose”.
Its purpose, now more than ever, is to stay alive and add to all the other voices!
I, personally, am grateful for all the time and effort you have put into this already.

I am also willing to give you any assistance within my power that I can.
I’m a desktop publisher and graphic designer, with lots of years behind me, who is also pretty literate and well-versed [hopefully, I come across that way. : )] I, too, am a much younger man trapped inside a younger body than the one you’re trapped in.

    You already have my e-mail.
I welcome any communication from you, and that is not limited to help requests.
I can’t say I will always have the time, but I am certainly willing to step in whenever I can.

    Cheers!

  47. Shazmar Says:

Jon, I’d just like to say I stumbled on your website by accident about 6 months ago. The stuff you were putting out keeps me coming back on almost a daily basis, time permitting. Now, I know the stuff you put out is available elsewhere but that means we have to find it, which can be time consuming. Time is something a lot of us don’t have due to other commitments i.e. work, family etc. So a quick check in with p2pnet can keep us up to date with the goings on of the RIAA etc.

So, first I’d like to thank you for the service you provide. As to the question should p2pnet stay or go I can only say this:- For purely selfish reasons I would say stay. If it is not taking away from your family life and you get some satisfaction from it I would say stay. If you get no satisfaction, it is costing you time and money best spent with your family or even if you thin it’s time to move onto something new I would say: – Can’t help you mate, it’s a decision only you can make but, I sincerely hope you decide to stay.

All the best for the future, whatever you decide.

Honestly, you should go. You may have been up for awhile, but if you even need to ask the question about staying or going, then you no longer hold the dedication to support this site, and are merely draining personal and financial resources in order to continue lying to yourself.

Not to mention your articles contain scattered, incomprehensible, and sometimes fictitious information (Albeit not on purpose).

Torrentfreak, wired, and so many other sites have replaced you already, and your place on these tubes we call the internet (interweb, snuggleweb, ect) has come to an end.

When you start putting advertisements in your footer that contains spyware masking itself as a spyware remover, it becomes quite evident.

  49. Reader's Write Says:

    Stay.
You just got going on facebook – that’s bound to have an effect on readership – especially once you get your group going on there, and invite people to join. (you only have a fans page now with no admins, so nobody is looking).
You should be referencing your posts in that group, so people have an incentive to join and to invite friends to join.
That should spread virally and get your readership over the top.

    @Adam Reimer

There’s always one and this time it had to be you. What ficticious stuff are you talking about.

Jon should stay. He’s done a lot to expose the corruption in this area and the pedigree of that antispyware app isn’t relevant to the existence of this website.

Anyway, I’ve tried researching that app myself and I can’t find a definitive answer to that one; it’s kind of a grey area. I’d say run a better known one instead eg Kaspersky, Norton etc, as it’s likely to be more effective.

I haz ballz and i WILL SAY,

Adam Reimer you need to STFU !!!

    mmk?

    :)

Thanks for all you have done, Jon. I believe you have helped create change, even if it was a just a slight push in the right direction. And that is what you started out to do, yesh? Its the right direction that counted, AMIRITE! Despite what you will chose to do in the future, I will just say,

    Thanks, bro.

ohhhh yah, i run Kaspersky 7, it kicks ass. Do not get Kaspersky 2009 cuz it conflicts with a lot of other programs. I had to uninstall it and reinstall previous version. :-/
