New MPAA boss a comedian
p2pnet.net News:- Dan Glickman, who’s taking over from Jack Valenti as the new boss of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), "relishes" his new role.
Known as "one of the funniest men in Congress," according to the Hollywood Reporter here, Glickman says, "I don’t know how funny I am. I think I’m funny."
But, "a sense of humor is something he will need as the former Kansas congressman and agriculture secretary has to make the transition from corn and sow bellies to Internet piracy and movies," says the story.
Anyway, "Behind Glickman’s self-deprecating, deadpan wit … lies a serious student of public policy, who says his jobs as agriculture secretary under President Clinton and as a moderate Democrat when he once ran the House Intelligence Committee will help him steer the motion picture industry through trying times," the Reporter states, going on:
"They’re both big parts of the American economy," he said. "Agriculture and creative pursuits - these are the two big industrial exports of this country. I’m not saying they are exactly the same; they aren’t. But I love this industry."
If at first you don’t succeed …
Glickman also tried out for Hilary Rosen’s position as head of the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) last year.
Mitch ‘Pirate’ Bainwol eventually got the job, scoring a reported $1 million a year - plus perks, of course.
But others considered for the post included former White House spokesman Mike McCurry, one-time Republican National Committee Chairman Rich Bond and "former Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman," says Eric’s Blog here, adding:
"Each was eliminated during a lengthy search process that stretched for a month after Rosen vacated the position."
