Warner Music jumps social networking

Says the Wikipedia, “Eos … is, in Greek mythology, the Titanic goddess of the dawn, who rose from her home at the edge of Oceanus, the Ocean that surrounds the world, to herald her brother Helios, the sun.”
Or, “Eos Airlines, Inc. was an American all-business class airline based at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York. On 26 April 2008 Eos Airlines announced their plans to file bankruptcy on their web site, announcing they would cease passenger operations after April 27.”
OR, it’s Warner Music’s latest cynical effort to milk the same people it, Vivendi Universal, EMI and Sony BMG, the other members of the anti-consumer, anti-P2P sue ‘em all club, are trying to terrorise into buying their CCCC (corporate cookie cutter crap).
In this context, might be better spelled Eew.
“Networking industry giant Cisco has just launched their Eos platform which is basically a set of online tools which can be added to an existing website to make it more social,” says stuff.techwhack.com.
“Warner Music Group is one of the first companies to announce their plans to use this platform on their network.”
Says WMG executive vice president of digital strategy and business development Michael Nash with a straight face »»»
As the Web shifts from the enterprise to the consumer in terms of where the traffic is coming from, the social media revolution – which is all about fans interacting with artists – is going to provide an enormous opportunity. This is a recognition that having a social media strategy is not just about partnering with social networks but it’s also about what we do with our direct-to-consumer efforts.
heh
Hey, Mike, fans have been interacting directly with artists for years without your help, and to their benefit, not yours.
And it’s always been the consumer with “the enterprise” struggling desperately to pull itself up by its bootstraps, having totally missed the boat when it became evident to everyone (except the corporate music industry) that P2P downloading technologies would become the online distribution and delivery vehicles.
“Several site development tools with a social networking focus have been around for years, particularly one called Ning, which powers several existing artist-focused social networks,” says Reuters, continuing:
“But outside of a few pioneering artists like 50 Cent and Kylie Minogue, few labels or artists have made much of an effort to turn it into a standard practice.
” ‘A lot of the interaction around artists occurs on MySpace or Facebook, where neither the label or the artist particularly monetizes those types of things,’ said Dan Scheinman, senior vice president/general manager of Cisco’s Media Solutions Group.
Then we get down to the crunch.
“Exactly how WMG or other labels plan to monetize their artists’ sites using the platform remains to be seen, but Scheinman said it will build the system with online advertising and sponsorship models in mind,” says the story.

Hey, writer of this article. Before you take digs at Michael Nash (my former inlaw), check out his history. He is a really interesting guy. I met him back when he curated “the art of seeing songs” back in the 80s. He may now be a big EVP at WMG (and maybe corporate speak is getting to him) but actually he is extremely cool, very much into artists and a poet at heart.
