Windows 7: better, faster than XP?

p2pnet news view | Products:- “I know many of you have had issues with the Windows 7 Beta site over the last 24 hours. As you may have noticed the download site has been up and running smoothly since this morning. That said, we apologize for the inconvenience that it caused some of you.  [yadayadayada] Thank you!”

You’re welcome.

This was a supposed Reader’s Write to our story quoting MS blogger Brandon LeBlanc on the fact the Windows 7 beta 2 wouldn’t, after all,  be released on the promised date.

(Like, what else is new? ;) )

Was the comment a cheap freebie advertising spam post from Microsoft? Or an unpaid Microsloth enthusiast doing the company’s work for it?

Either way, the beta has been online unofficially for weeks, thanks to the P2P networks.

“Don’t bother tried it [the Windows 7 beta 2], its crap could’nt even get a stinking creative sound card going on it. Try again M$” – says a p2pnet reader.

But, “Creative soundcards don’t obey hardware based DRM locks,” responds Dreddsnik. “Older video cards are the same way. They don’t WANT you to be able to run hardware that can’t be shackled. trust me, the problem IS deliberate.”

However, “Wow, bloggers quite like Windows 7,” reports Computerworld, quoting people who’d tried it out.

“It’s different than XP – and as far as I’m concerned, better as well,” the story has Preston Gralla saying.

MBoffin says, “I’m running Windows 7 on my Dell Mini and it runs faster than Windows XP Home ran on this exact same machine.”

And, according to the story, “hob42 agrees, in part: “I know I bought a … ‘Vista Capable’ … laptop … but I still expected a brand new computer to at least be able to let me double-click a folder in explorer without stalling and spinning for tens of seconds … I ended up rolling back to XP. I grabbed the 7 beta around midnight Friday, and put it on the same laptop … While it isn’t as fast as XP, it’s really quite useable even with all the Aero features on … it’s a non-issue completely … Lots of things are just ‘better’.”

Stay tuned. ;)

7 is indeed very good. It’s very snappy on my main PC and has some nice GUI enhancements. Older video cards and Creative sounds cards do work with it, regardless of any DRM crap – just make sure that you’re using the latest Vista drivers.

I’m gonna try it on one of my older machines and see how it takes to that.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Windows 7 looks to be on track. Runs better than XP did on my Laptop.
Now if we can convince MS not to fill it with extra stuff we don’t need I’ll be good to go.
And by extra crap I do not mean IE. We need IE to download Firefox or Opera …..

  3. Reader's Write Says:

can anyone tel me if this is permanent? if i install it will it run for a couple of weeks and then i’ll have to reinstall Xp or buy windows 7? Thx

  4. Reader's Write Says:

never install a beta operating system on a main computer.
i installed it on a diagnostic laptop i use for connecting to SCADA units. The software i use to connect runs off vmware (which works on windows 7) and is windows 2000.

if you want to try it out find a computer that meets the requirements and does not have any important files on it.

  5. Josh Says:

Thinking about installing it on a spare partition on my main computer just to try it out, but was worried about drivers… Vista drivers you say? Hmmm…

Everything important is on Ubuntu, so I should be good to go… unless it causes physical problems with my computer…

  6. Reader's Write Says:

    @ Josh … DON’T
it’s been known to eat everything
ppl testing it that i know are experiencing all kinds of probs => hardware, software, security, privacy … you name it
try it on separate scrap box that u can toss

That’s why i said in previous post that it’s BETA, why should i or anyone do their work for them, pay me and i’ll think about it

Stick to well tested and proven OS’s and appz ;)

  7. Reader's Write Says:

Been using Ubuntu Linux since Vista came out. Don’t plan on switching.

  8. Reader's Write Says:

Remember folks, this is a beta, and thus it will likely be missing a lot of the bloat. I’ll wait until I see the final product before I start lauding M$’s efforts. Also, the guys beta testing these things often have top notch hardware… Personally, I don’t see why I need 4gb of ram or more just to run windoze, when ubuntu etc can run on 1gb very nicely; Yes I agree that hardware will be upgraded eventually, but that’s not an excuse to run a bloated, resource devouring operating system.

  9. Alan Smithie Says:

Try putting linux on your machine then you will see what fast is.

  10. Joe Says:

Just install a virtual machine and play with it until you’re bored. give vmware a try.

  11. Ian Says:

Have installed it on a P4 2ghz 512mb RAM, and it runs fine – faster in fact than the xp that was on it before. Some issues with installing programs after it is connected to a domain, but, as everyone says, it is still a beta. All in all, much better than vista. So far.

  12. lols Says:

Lol soundblaster was the thing in the 90’s
