Canadian film on Oscars short-list
p2pnet news view | Movies:- Benoit Pilon’s The Necessities of Life is a “Finely wrought drama” inspired by a tuberculosis epidemic in the Inuit population of Canada’s Far North in the 1940s and 50s, says Variety, going on:
“Natar Ungalaaq of ‘The Fast Runner,’ stars as a stricken man yanked from his isolated home terrain to a Quebec City hospital, where he experiences both profound culture shock and some barrier-transcending human connections.
“A model of delicate emotional restraint, the handsome pic earns its many lump-in-throat moments. Likely fest kudos should spur offshore tube sales and hopefully some arthouse placements.”
Now the French-language Inuit drama has become Canada’s submission for the foreign-language entry for the Oscars.
It was nominated for best Canadian film at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle awards, ultimately losing to C’est pas moi, je le jure!, says Straight.com.
However, Natar Ungalaaq, who’s also a filmmaker and a well-known sculptor, won the VFCC best actor in a Canadian film award.
