Number 6, Patrick McGoohan, dies

p2pnet news view | TV:- Number Six, Patrick McGoohan, has died.

The star of the now cult TV show The Prisoner, in which all the characters are numbered, he passed away at the age of 80 after a short illness, say reports.

“The show’s meaning remains a source of debate, says the Washington Post.

“Some viewers saw the drama, which aired at a peak moment of the 1960s counterculture movement, as a critique of establishment power over the individual. The unnamed hero proclaims at one point, ‘I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own’.”

He also starred as  John Drake in the 1960s British TV series Secret Agent.

McGoohan was born in New York and raised in Ireland and the UK.

The Prisoner was simply THE BEST TV series ever! It was imaginative, beautiful, exciting and stirred a fan debate which will never be resolved, but it’s still fun! The idea of a remake is horrible and sadly will fade into oblivion much like the remakes for The Invaders, Psycho and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, instead of being the entity the original is and will always be. McGoohan will be sadly missed!

Those of us in the know will realize that No. 6 WAS Drake. There are clues in many the episodes of both series. Of course after McGoohan fired George Markstein, he tried to make No. 6 as ubiquitously “Everyman” as possible, but he couldn’t disentangle the show from allusions to the previous one.

Officially, however, he can’t be the same character, or else a battle over royalties for the Prisoner would ensue by the owners of Danger Man (NOT “Secret Agent” which was an American title).

It always seems to boil down to royalties and trademarks, doesn’t it?

  3. Carolyn Says:

As I now watch the entire Prisoner Series once again, I am amazed at how the last episode The Fallout resembles the strong arm of comformity that the Obama administration is exerting on our nation. Government control is not for me I am not number I am a Free Woman!!
