Franz Ferdinand and the Web Sheriff

p2pnet news view | P2P | Music:- Remember when the Arctic Monkeys crapped on their fans, the people who’d rocketed them to fame and fortune by sharing their music online?

Once they’d achieved a suitable level of notoriety, the band sicced Web Sheriff, aka John Giacobbi, on the fans who’d pushed them to the top.

Prince did the same,  as did disco band Village People, and now Franz Ferdinand may be at it.

Which, if that’s the case, is particularly poignant, to put it mildly.

Because of downloading, “people are going to buy songs only if they are good,” said the band’s Alex Kapranos in a Playboy interview quoted by Right Thoughts.

I think that’s a positive thing. It means lazy bands aren’t going to get away with giving you one hit single and an album full of filler. We like the idea that every song should stand up in its own right so you don’t have to listen to a song in the context of an album to understand it.

I suppose that’s why I’m sympathetic to the download environment.

Now it could be a different story.

“On behalf of Domino Records and Franz Ferdinand, we would kindly ask you not to post copies of ‘Tonight’ [their yet-to-be-released studio album]  on your site,” says Web Sheriff, quoted by TorrentFreak.

The Cease & Desists notice even adds, “We do appreciate that you are fans of / are promoting Franz Ferdinand, but the label and artist would greatly appreciate your co-operation in removing your links to the pirate files in question.”

But, does Franz Ferdinand, “know about the involvement of Web Sheriff and his threatening tone towards the site admins”? – wonders the story.

Or is it all orchestrated by the record label?

Stay tuned on that and meanwhile, Tonight will be available in stores on January 26, adds TorrentFreak.
