Stay of execution for Gary McKinnon
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- Gary McKinnon has been given an 11th hour reprieve, “days before a final decision on his extradition is made,” says the FreeGary site, quoting the The Ham & High, McKinnon’s local newspaper.
McKinnon, now 42, recently confessed to hacking into US military computers.
“Would you admit to something you didn’t do to get the heavies off your back?” – asked a p2pnet story, going on:
“McKinnon, who last year briefly won a stay of execution, so to speak, over his extradition to the US, has done exactly that avoid being forcibly exported to America as what amounts to a scapegoat for US security system failings.”
McKinnon’s lawyer, Karen Todner, has now, “received a letter from the director of public prosecutions (DPP) stating it would take up to four weeks to deliberate over Mr McKinnon’s signed confession,” says The Ham & High, adding:
“On Tuesday (January 20), he faces an oral application for a judicial review at the High Court, where his lawyers now plan to delay the extradition until after the DPP has come to a decision.
“If that fails, we really have come to the end of the line,” says Todner.
“Gary would then be extradited within the next 10 days.”
In our last post on the McKinnon case, “Can people be extradited from the US to Britain?” – we wondered.
“They cannot,” said Martin in an email, saying he was “pretty sure” but not “100% sure”.
If he’s right, Americans can hack UK computers without fear of having to face British justice, such as it is.
Stay tuned.
