Death verdicts in China poisoned milk scandal

p2pnet news view | Crime:- Two men charged by Chinese authorities in the Sanlu poisoned milk tragedies have been sentenced to death.

Chinese babies died after drinking contaminated milk formula and Chinese search engine Baidu was said to have “managed” search results containing negative news about scandal

Now, “Two were sentenced to death and one received life imprisonment for their roles in the melamine contaminated milk case,” says China Daily.

“Zhang Yujun, 40, and Geng Jinping, 48, were sentenced to death,” says The Straits Times.

“Zhang Yujun was handed the death penalty for producing 776 tonnes of melamine,” says China Daily.

The second man, TGeng Jinping, was convicted of adding melamine to milk and selling it to dairy companies, says the story, adding:

“The former head of Sanlu, Tian Wenhua (right) received a life sentence for failing to stop producing and selling milk products even after she was informed of the contamination.”

Tainted with melamine

More than 6,200 babies developed kidney stones after drinking Sanlu baby formula, tainted with the chemical melamine, admitted official China state news agency Xinhua.

Then, “Chinese Internet-search giant Baidu.com Inc. has become embroiled in a public backlash over tainted milk, in a sign that fast growth and market dominance have a flip side for a company sometimes called the ‘Google of China’,” said the Wall Street Journal, continuing:

“But observers of China’s lucrative Internet business said Baidu’s online antagonists present another challenge for a company that is already grappling with tighter privacy restrictions and increasingly vocal competitors.

“It also shines a light on Baidu’s business practices. Unlike Google Inc., which places paid search results outside of the main search listings, Baidu allows advertisers to pay their way up to higher positions within search results.”
