Telemarketers love Do Not Call List

Neither. It’s industry minister Tony Clement (right) who, quoted in the Globe and Mail, has apparently finally clued into the fact the Do-Not-Call-List is virtually worthless.

But his sudden awakening isn’t because the Harper government has suddenly developed an awareness of the fact the list, created to supposedly protect people from troublesome and unwanted telemarketing calls, would more properly be called the Do Not Hesitate to Call list, as Geist dubbed it.

It’s because it’s of benefit only to the very people it’s supposed to guard against, and calls from reporters have produced a predictable reaction from the government which, unlike the new Barack Obama administration, hasn’t yet understood the Net, not the old-world corporate press, is the communications medium of the 21st digital century.

Unbelievably, the lists from the DNCL registry, run by Bell Canada which is itself under attack for abusing its own customers, and administered by the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) can be easily and cheaply bought online from the latter, which recently described the list as an unqualified success.

The idea was/is marketeers would then know who not to call.

Not only but also, “For the last couple of months, I’ve been receiving calls from Bell’s contracted telemarketers, AIC Global,” charged Devil’s Advocate.The number shows up on the display as Bell Canada AIC 18777670751, he said, going on, “I’ve yet to actually pick it up and as a result, this number has continued to ring me every day, at least three times a day, for the last few months.”

Meanwhile, “Mr. Clement said he sympathizes with Canadians on the list who are still being harassed,” says the Globe and Mail, adding:

“He said he had spoken to CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein and stressed the need for abusers to be found and punished.

” ‘The CRTC chair shares the concern that Canadians expect and deserve that investigations into do-not-call list complaints should proceed quickly, and that strong penalties are to be imposed on abusers,’ Mr. Clement said.”

    If Konrad’s so onside with us, why are we hearing CRTC statements about the DNCL program being such a raging success?!
    He supposedly runs the show, yet there’s no concensus in what he says in conjunction with what the rest of the Commission puts out.

    And why is it that neither Bell’s disregard for the rules, or their use of autodialers in their own telemarketing campaign, never gets so much of a mention from the CRTC? Autodialer use is still against the law when used in the manner Bell is using it.

    I get that stupid automated telemarketing message about every other day and am on do not call. The number appears to be coming in from a VOIP 000-000-0000
    What’s to stop some foreign company from beating the bark off the list? That is what I suspect is happening.

    Telemarketers do not want to waste their time trying to sell someone that is not interested in hearing from them. Overall the outbound industry is setup where agents in a large centre all auto dial random leads. This is not an enviroment to achieve great conversion and sales numbers.

    Bell has guaranteed that they will NEVER have my business again (have been with Rogers for over 2 years). Two days ago a Bell telemarketer called my home phone, where the answering service has my cell phone for business purposes (explicitly mentioning that it *is* a cell number). He then calls my cell phone during the day (when it costs me money) and when I asked how the telemarketer got my cell number, he said he was calling my home number. The numbers are not tied together, so he would have had to call my cell number separately. So now not only does he waste my time, he costs me money. Well done, Bell, you’ve permanently lost any chance of getting me back as a customer!

    Unbelievable. I was on the phone reaming out some clown calling from a mortgage spammer called Dominion Lending when I had to end my rant to take the other line. It was another outfit flogging scammy Costa Rica cruises. I’m supposedly on the DNC list. My daughter’s being hounded on her cell phone now because, you guessed it – on the do not call list.
