Muxtape is back
p2pnet news view RIAA | P2P:- RIAA puts the mockers on Muxtape, p2pnet posted in August last year.
Then, “Muxtape: back ‘in the service of bands’,” we said in September, going on to quote Justin Ouellette, CEO and founder, as saying »»»
Muxtape is relaunching as a service exclusively for bands, offering an extremely powerful platform with unheard-of simplicity for artists to thrive on the internet. Musicians in 2008 without access to a full time web developer have few options when it comes to establishing themselves online, but their needs often revolve around a common set of problems. The new Muxtape will allow bands to upload their own music and offer an embeddable player that works anywhere on the web, in addition to the original muxtape format. Bands will be able to assemble an attractive profile with simple modules that enable optional functionality such as a calendar, photos, comments, downloads and sales, or anything else they need. The system has been built from the ground up to be extended infinitely and is wrapped in a template system that will be open to CSS designers. There will be more details soon. The beta is still private at the moment, but that will change in the coming weeks.
Now it really is back.
“Welcome to a preview of the new Muxtape, a minimalist platform for bands to promote their music and listeners to create mixes,” it says.
“We’ve invited 12 of our favorite artists to help test, and in the coming weeks we’ll begin allowing bands to sign up themselves for free.”
What happened to the old Muxtape?
“The short version,” says Ouellette, “is that we couldn’t find a way to make a licensing deal work with the major record labels and were shut down. Instead, we’re recreating the site as a platform for bands to promote and market themselves. The goal of Muxtape remains facilitating the discovery of new music, and anyone can still create a mix from the music available on the site.”
What makes Muxtape different?
“Muxtape strives for simplicity and believes that music needs a clean, unobstrusive context. Artist pages will never be forced to display ads. The functionality of Muxtape will expand over time; in addition to streaming music, we will enable bands to easily sell downloads, issue tickets, create and sell merchandise, network with other bands and listeners, and track the way their music is being heard across the system. An API will be available to expand the platform even further.
When can you sign up?
“We’re still testing the system and will announce signup information in the coming weeks,” Ouellette promises.
All of the features currently available on Muxtape (music player, MP3 hosting, images and calendar) will be free for any band to use, he told Wired, adding:
“Artists will only pay to use the service if they want to sell downloads or merchandise through the site.”
