Sundance Queer Lounge
p2pnet news view Off Topic | Freedom:- One of the problems with sexual orientation labels is: they’re oriented.
Since time immemorial some men have fancied other men (homosexual). Some women have fancied other women (lesbian). Some men like dressing up as women and some women like dressing up as men (transvestites). Some men and women of various sexual orientations like being tortured and humiliated (sadomasochism). Some people like dressing up as Donald Duck (Quackism).
It’s human nature, just like some people are really nice and others are total assholes.
Taking charge of the purse strings
Yesterday Emma, my 12-year-old daughter, and I watched Blossoms of Fire, a 2000 documentary about the people of Juchitán, Oaxaca, Mexico.
There, the women rule, taking charge of the purse strings (same as in our house
) and people of any and all sexual persuasions are, well, just people, with no special emphasis.
Isn’t that the way it should be?
The pic on the right is a clip from the Blossoms of Fire YouTube trailer.
But the famous Sundance film festival goes in the exact opposite direction, drawing attention to the differences with a ‘Queer Lounge’ started, says MovieMaker, in 2004.
It’s featured an “impressive array of renowned guest speakers and provided an informal forum for stimulating movie-making conversation,” says the story, quoting the lounge’s founder, Ellen Huang, as saying »»»
The idea started when, as a feature film executive, I went to film festivals like Sundance and Cannes, and at Cannes, they had international pavilions – areas dedicated to specific countries, like the American Pavilion, Irish Pavilion, etc. – where their countrymen could gather, engage in panel discussions and pick up material promoting films from their country.
I thought, ‘Why not a gay and lesbian pavilion?’ And the best place seemed to be at Sundance where some of the most seminal lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) films have been launched like Hedwig and the Angry Inch and The Times of Harvey Milk, and so many LGBT filmmakers, press and industry execs network.
Yeh, I know, there are all kinds of Gay Pride parades, all kinds of gay movie and music festivals, all kinds of gay bars, and so on.
But I wish there weren’t.
Cheers! And end of rant.

It is a well sung tune,
“We’re no different than you” yet it is strange how they work so hard to be considered “different”.
Just my two cents
p.s. WTF> As said many a different time on this site, this is a personal site run by Jon, and he can post any thing he wants. Unless you are paying a user fee (to Jon) or are financially supporting P2Pnet, don’t complain. If you don’t like it, skip it

Hi, Jon,
I’m glad you liked Blossoms! I’m still inspired by the Juchitecans, now having known them for about 16 years. They also have had a disabled transvestite who ran for the national Senate – she didn’t win but she really made an impression and continues to do great work to help her community and others in AIDS education and other issues. That’s the next long term goal now for our country, no? Then we won’t need Queer Lounges! Best, Maureen Gosling, filmmaker, BLOSSOMS OF FIRE
