Mickey Rourke plays the ageing Randy the Ram whose life revolves entirely around the wrestling ring, fake matches and all.

He’s brilliantly supported by Marissa Tomei as lap-dance girl Cassidy. But it’s Rourke who runs the movie which, apart from demonstrating just how excellent a film can be without hugely expensive special effects and locations, shows what really goes on before, during and after pro wrestlng matches.

He’s amazing and when the Miami Herald reported he’d be mixing it for real with WWE superstar Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania 25 in Houston, on April 5, it was thoroughly believable.

Rourke was quoted as promising he’d throw Jericho around the ring “like tossed salad”.

But Not, Rourke now says.

A Rourke spokeswoman says he won’t be taking his role as a professional wrestler into a real-life ring after all, says the Associated Press.

So, no need to stay tuned.
