p2pnet Readerâs Writes: follow-up
p2pnet news view P2P:- Wotcha, all. Me again, and I’m posting this with humble apologies.
It’s a follow-up to yesterday’s items on comments and if you’re bored with the subject and want to move on, skip this. I fully understand. And sympathise. I’m getting sick of it myself. heh.
However, I had quite a few emails and to answer them in one hit, and to acknowledge the thoughts under the Reader’s Writes item and elsewhere:
A) I’m not going to monitor comment posts, other than for spam;
B) I won’t be asking people to register before they can post; and
C) I’m not going to start using CAPTCHA, or anything else.
But I am going to try and keep posts minimally on track, which means Readers’ Writes which contribute in one way or another to the conversation at hand will be, as they’ve always been, welcomed.
So »»»
- Slagging someone because you don’t like them, their ideas, because they can’t spell, or because they may not be as good as you at expressing themselves, is definitely not on.
- No spam! If you’re posting as an excuse to promote yourself, your site, your latest thoughts on how to save the world, or to get free advertising, forget it.
- Don’t just post for the sake of it. If you genuinely have something you believe is relevant, go for it. Otherwise …
- If you think it’s fun to go trolling, go and troll somewhere else
Cheers! And thanks.

I strongly suggest putting those rules where they can clearly be seen eg as in putting a big link to them in bold bright red text or something on the home page and on every article you publish. The artistic details I’ll leave up to you!
Glad you’re not giving up p2pnet.

Hey Jon – Did you know there’s actually a project out there working on sophisticated filtering heuristics for stupid comment posts?
I know the comments system here doesn’t like links but Google “StupidFilter” – its stupidfilter dot org.
It’s kind of genius: “The solution we’re creating is simple: an open-source filter software that can detect rampant stupidity in written English.”
Haven’t had a chance to work with it myself but it looks promising

I’m not sure if I’m ready to embark on a software censor, no matter how well meant. But it looks like a story, at the least.
I’ve emailed them so stay tuned.
And thanks …
Cheers!

DRM Koolaid’s idea is a good idea.
Go with that Jon, it at least gives you a standing point.
At any rate, almost all forums have moderaters to “keep the peace” or to “keep things on track”.
Generally you allow a lot of flexibility as long as it is related.
Personally this is the best forum out there with the respect of freedom of speech.
