Nickelback – ‘Something in Your Mouth’

p2pnet news view | P2P | Music:- It’s a sign of the times that Nickelback, aka Chad Kroeger (right), is a feature in the 2009 Juno Awards . A bad sign.

But it’s not surprising. The awards, named after CRTC (Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission) boss Pierre Juneau, are a love-in where nominees tell each other how wonderful they are and where Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG get to pretend there’s a Canadian music industry.

The guys in Nickelback, in turn, have become filthy rich by singing the same song over and over and over.

When the nominees for the 2009 Juno Awards were announced, “it was no surprise that B.C.-based rock band Nickelback took the lead with five nominations,” says the Canwest News Service, going on to quote CTV president Susanne Boyce as telling journalists, “who expressed an ambivalent reaction” to the news, “Come on, you’re supposed to be excited!”

Right.

“They’re just the undying bastion of hoser rock,” says Stuart Berman, editor of EyeWeekly.com and a music writer for Pitchfork. “[Frontman] Chad Kroeger is this dude who basically drinks a lot of beer and writes songs about having sex with girls and really confirms these stereotypes about Canada that many of us are trying to transcend.”

Clearly, Berman doesn’t consider himself a fan of Nickelback. Still, he points out that, regardless of what he may think, the group at least deserves credit for the sheer number of albums they continue to sell.

“And there’s something to be said for their lyrics, too,” he adds.

“You have to admire how unsubtle they are with metaphor, like in the song Something in Your Mouth, for instance.”
