FTC to order copyright group JASRAC to end monopolistic practices – Kyodo News

The Fair Trade Commission has notified JASRAC, a major copyright protection group for musicians, that it will be ordered to stop collecting usage fees because it violates the Antimonopoly Law, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday. The FTC believes the system, in which TV and radio broadcasters pay the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, will cause difficulties when similar entities try to enter the music copyright business, the sources said. Under current practice, JASRAC is entitled to a flat 1.5 percent cut of a broadcaster’s revenue regardless of how often tunes under its copyright management are aired.

Amazon.com Press Conference Sparks Kindle Speculation – Bloomberg News

Amazon.com Inc.’s plans for a press conference today at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York have fueled speculation that the company will release a new version of the Kindle, its electronic-book reader. Amazon.com hasn’t given a topic for the event, hosted by Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos. Still, blogs and analysts say the timing is right for a new Kindle. The current model sold out before the holidays — the second year in a row that demand eclipsed supply. The Internet retailer may say it has signed an exclusivity deal with thriller writer Stephen King to put a new novel on the Kindle, the Wall Street Journal reported today.

One of the world’s most famous soccer players, Alessandro del Piero of the Juventus club in Italy, is said to be suing Facebook. He is distressed because of a Facebook profile that purports to be his (it features his name and image) and carries links to Nazi propaganda sites. Del Piero, who is as handsome as David Beckham (research conducted by me among females in the last 30 minutes) and a somewhat more accomplished player (no research needed), claims that he has never had a Facebook profile. Fascist symbolism has a long history in Italian soccer. If you’ve ever been to a home game of the Lazio club in Rome, you might believe that, for certain fans, Mussolini is alive and well, and living on the Mediterranean coast.

The Pirate Bay Demand Webcast of Trial – TorrentFreak

Set to start in just a few days time, the trial of The Pirate Bay will be one of the most important cases the file-sharing community has ever witnessed. However, due to restrictions, the number of people viewing it first hand could be very limited indeed. ‘Time to make demands,’ says Peter Sunde. pirate bayOn February 16th 2009, one of the biggest trials in P2P history begins. The case of the largest BitTorrent tracker, The Pirate Bay, will be followed by millions around the world. The Pirate Bay team have been preparing for the media battle, in part by designating their tour bus as the site`s official media center. But already there are complaints about how accessible the trial will be to the public, with TiAMO and Brokep demanding changes to how it will be made available. In true Pirate Bay style, they want everyone to have access, one way or another.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

FTC to order copyright group JASRAC to end monopolistic practices

At last someone has seen the obvious.
BTW. JASRAC is an ASCAP associate/partner in licencsing.

When will ASCAP also be stopped?
