p2pnet news view | RIAA News:- Before I’d even heard of the RIAA my friend, Bill Evans, had started a site purpose-designed for people who, even back in 2001, were sick and tired of being cheated, on the one hand, and being called criminals and thieves, on the other, by the very organisations which depended on them for their existence.
He told them what to do about it.
Boycott Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG.
“I personally would like to thank the RIAA for their continuing ‘Copyright Holy War’,” said Bill who, tragically, killed himself last year.
But Overlawyered quoted Bill in 2006.
“When I founded Boycott-riaa.com[...] I swore to not buy RIAA members music,” he said, going on »»»
Being a music fan who always has something playing in the background, I thought this would be difficult. However I soon discovered there is a wealth of independent music out there every bit as good, if not better, Less expensive, and the money goes to the musicians, not an international conglomerate.
Thank you RIAA for turning me on to independent music.
Unfortunately, Bill ran out of money and had to sell the site, which is now a pale shadow of what it used to be.
But his idea hasn’t faded.
DON’T buy anything from any of the companies linked to, or associated with, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) or Vivendi Universal (France), Sony BMG (Japan and Germany), EMI (Britain), and Warner Music (US).
The Rise and Fall of the Corporate Music Industry
The Big 4 labels, whining constantly about steadily declining sales, are infamous for farming out spurious ’studies’ designed to ‘prove’ they have online music lovers where they want them, and that they’ve been able to successfully corral the P2P filesharing networks.
However, nothing could be further from the truth and the one study which would show things as they really are has never been compiled.
The labels have blamed everyone from dead grandmothers to video games for their woes but there’s never been a research project aimed at showing exactly how much The Rise and Fall of the Corporate Music Industry is down to the fact music lovers have just plain stopped buying ‘product’.
Because whether the media, or anyone else, want to admit it or not, it’s a solid gold certainty that a significant part of lost sales is down not to filesharing, but to file sharers, aka customers, discovering where to find new music, and it sure as hell isn’t from the Big 4.
Like, wouldn’t you have to be crazy to buy anything from companies which treat you like shit?
RIAA board members are »»»
Mitch Bainwol, RIAA; Victoria Bassetti, EMI Recorded Music; Colin Finkelstein, EMI Recorded Music; Bill Hearn, EMI Christian Music Group; Deirdre McDonald, SonyBMG; Joe Galante, SonyBMG; Kevin Kelleher, SonyBMG; Rob Stringer, SonyBMG; Julie Swidler, SonyBMG Music; Luke Wood, Interscope Records; Jeff Harleston, Universal Music Group; Zach Horowitz, Universal Music Group; Mel Lewinter, Universal Motown Republic Group; Craig Kallman, The Atlantic Group; Tom Whalley, Warner Bros Records; Michael Fleisher , Warner Music Group; Kevin Liles, Warner Music Group; Bob Cavallo, Buena Vista Music; Glen Barros, Concord Music Group; Mike Curb, Curb Records; Michael Koch, Koch Entertainment; Tom Silverman, Tommy Boy Entertainment; Steve Bartels, Island Records and, Alan Meltzer, Wind Up Records.
Below is a list of RIAA companies to ignore. But before you check that, the Wikipedia names non-RIAA labels incorrectly cited as members. They are »»»
And so you know which companies to avoid like the plague, here’s the complete, unedited list as published on the RIAA site »»»

So, if I understand this correctly, the smaller list should be removed from the larger?

@ Devil’s Advocate
Yup.
Cheers!

Nice list.
It might be easier for a lot of people to just go to riaaradar.com and let their search engine see if an album or artist is on any RIAA labels.

Even simpler solution:
“Hide behind” (thanks, Sam!) the first-sale doctrine, and NEVER pay retail for music IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Thanks to the first-sale “loophole” (as RIAA apologists love to call it) everytime you buy a reasonably-priced album (say, from the “used” bin at a record store or from Amazon.com), the RIAA don’t get DICK.
Ironically enough, this is also the route that makes the most sense economically (since, unlike from “authorized” sellers, the stuff isn’t drastically overpriced.

How about a list of who NOT to boycott? hehe

Yup, thats something some of us have been suggesting frequently.
Don’t Buy, Don’t Download, if you HAVE to have it, buy it used.
There’s a problem though.
Around here the label reps have been putting some kind of pressure on the CD and GAME resale shops,
which has been resulting in them closing down. Also, the smaller new CD stores ( of the mom and pop variety)
used to be treasure trove of used discs as well.
We all know how the labels drove them out of business in favor of lower variey, Big Box stores such
as Wal-Mart.
I’m sure they are working on some sort of modification to “First-Sale” and the customer won’t
find out about it till the deed is done.

Nice list! I really need to visit RIAARadar.com more often; not that it matters much, because I haven’t bought an RIAA-sponsored CD in perhaps 5 years. I listen to electronic dance, and very few DJs who release dance albums are on labels that are RIAA members.
The RIAA-sponsored faction of the music industry lost me when I started noticing that radio stations were playing sthe same songs 10 or even 20 times a day, leading me to believe that radio playlists were shrinking dramatically. Twenty years ago, the average top radio station had 200 songs on their playlist. Today you’ll be hard-pressed to find one with at least 50 songs on their daily rotation.
No surprise to me anymore. The FM radio station (if not ALL of conventional radio) is dying today, and Sirius-XM with it. I was once tempted to get Sirius or XM because of the folly that is the FM music radio station today. The Internet radio station is the new breed, one that deserves to proliferate worldwide. The RIAA and their members are afraid of the benefits that the independent (or non-RIAA) music community will have if Internet radio should gain in popularity. That’s why (if I read correctly) they tried to bankrupt Pandora with bizarre royalty rate hikes. The simple solution for Pandora, I suppose, is to dump all RIAA music from their databases.
I gather that, like their failed efforts to have RIAA-sponsored music, if not ALL music in general, classified in the same manner as you would classify a CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, their efforts to stymie Internet radio will fail or have failed. In my opinion, I see it as a case of too little, too late. That’s because we now see tabletop and portable Internet radios on the market, from manufacturers like Aluratek.com; and if I read the info at Aluratek’s Web site correctly, with these things you don’t even have to hook it up to a machine to get transmission from an Internet station.
In my opinion, the first kiss of death for the music industry came when most of the (RIAA-member) labels killed the single from the racks, in an attempt to force people to buy entire albums with only one or two decent hits. It was from there (c2000-01) that the quality of the music they were putting out started to fall. Then radio stations made it harder for older new artists (and I dare say much-older veterans) to get played. Then they started suing their own customers, and some of them fought back.
There has been quite a bit of angst from those who have been fighting the RIAA on the issue of how intellectual property (if we can even call it that) should be defined, with a lot of heat being directed at the Obama administration. I haven’t read all the details, but it seems as if, like W. and his Cabinet before him, Obama and his Cabinet have not been completely informed about the level of sinister that the RIAA and their supporters have gone to get what seems to be full, complete and absolute control of the ENTIRE music industry.
Needless to say, if I heard and read correctly of the tactics they are trying to pull to get their way, they will only succeed to accelerate the death of the industry. We have already reached a point where Norah Jones’ ‘Come Away With Me’ (2002-03) will likely be the last 10-million-sellier this decade AND the next, if not for good.
For the record, in my opinion, ‘intellectual property’, as far as music is concerned, should apply to only 3 entities: The artist, the songwriter and the producer. The only job the fat cats have is to promote it; and in many cases they have been quite poor at that. Even if they do a decent job of promoting this material, it is usually to the detriment of the industry as a whole. Think payola, as a possible example. What do they think they gain by cornering radio and freezing out non-RIAA music from the dials?
Probably not much these days. Fewer and fewer of their artists are able to go gold, let alone platinum. That, I assume, forces the artists to tour a lot more to break even with their record company’s bottom line, and perhaps bring in a profit. Like that means anything these days, because I’d bet good horse money that even the profits are smaller today, compared with 10 or 15 years ago.
The RIAA’s efforts to turn the music industry into their own little dictatorship will fail. Technology will continue to move forward, and there’s nothing they can do to stop it. Funny that they haven’t begged the government to outlaw MP3 or Internet radio technology altogether (yet), because they know that anything of the sort will create the biggest backlash in the history of retail.
Have any of you picked up Steve Knopper’s book, ‘Appetite for Self-Destruction: The Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age’? I’ve seen a fraction of the contents, and I imagine he predicts (like so many of us hope) that the RIAA will cease to be a viable lobbying group, if not cease to exist altogether. If music retailers like Virgin continue to close, and record sales continue to fall, and companies continue to drop artists (which would certainly help the indie labels if some of these artists join), they will. What the copyFIGHT people must emphasize (very strongly), should they succeed in getting an audience with Congress, if not the President and Attorney General, is that the RIAA, aside from having been a rogue operation for most of this decade, bordering on violating (if not actually having engaged in such violations) one or more statutes of RICO law (given what I have been reading over the years), serves neither the artist nor the producer, nor even the songwriter. They serve only themselves and their fat-cat partners. If ever the copyfight groups and the victims of the RIAA get a chance to challenge the RIAA before Congress, they can pretty much eviscerate the RIAA by detailing, point by point, the many errors of their ways. Surely they will catch the RIAA in a web of lies and ruin their efforts to gain complete control of what is now a dwindling and dying industry.
To Dreddsnik: Interesting point about the music industry trying to destroy the used retail store. Fortunately the music industry is in such a free-fall that even big-box retailers like Walmart, Target and Best Buy are devoting less space to music. Even worse for the RIAA is that the Web is full of used retailers, thousands upon thousands. What are they going to do? Start with eBay and ‘encourage’ them to remove the sellers who sell used CDs at cut-rate prices? There isn’t a law anywhere that bans anyone from selling used material of this type; and if they try to have the used retailers thrown off the Web, they can kiss their @$$e$ goodbye, because the people, and perhaps even sites like eBay, will drown the RIAA in so much litigation that they will have no choice but to disband.
