M&M’s World Headlines: Feb 10, 2009

Twitter is planning to charge brands for using the micro-blogging website – Marketing

Co-founder Biz Stone told Marketing: ‘We are noticing more companies using Twitter and individuals following them. We can identify ways to make this experience even more valuable and charge for commercial accounts.’ He would not be drawn on the level of charges. Stone said it could also create revenue-generating features to tap into the way brands use Twitter as a hybrid marketing and customer-service tool. But Bob Pearson, vice-president of communities and conversations at Dell, said: ‘If it becomes complicated and costly, our instinct would be to move elsewhere.’ Robin Grant, managing director of social media agency We Are Social, said Twitter could charge for display ads or to access customer information for marketing.

Mac cloner forces Apple’s hand-OSX for all The Inquirer

Mac-cloning upstart Psystar, which has been a thorn in Apple’s corporate side for months now, has won the right to persue a counterclaim against the Cupertino Cabal which, if it is succesful, could feasibly lead to any old Tom, Dell or HP being allowed to sell computers preinstalled with the sacred OSX. In an effort to crack down on crimes including extortion and kidnappings, Mexico passed a law requiring all mobile phone customers to be fingerprinted. The law, which goes into effect in April, will give mobile phone companies one year to establish a database of their clients including fingerprints. The law also requires phone companies to store call information, text and voice messages for one year. The law is in reaction to the growing number of criminal gangs in Mexico, currently around 700, that use cell phones to extract payments from extortion and kidnap victims and their families.

Marijuana or booze? Restaurant must decide The Star

Kindos owns Gator Ted’s Tap & Grill in Burlington. Four years ago, he asked a marijuana smoker to step away from his front door. The medically licensed toker complained to the Ontario Human Rights Commission of bias against a disabled person. He won. Kindos was about to pay the fine and post obligatory signs saying, “We accommodate medicinal marijuana smokers,” when a different government agency told him he could lose his liquor licence. Serving anybody possessing a controlled substance prescribed or not is against the law. “Heads I win, tails you lose,” Kindos said yesterday. The Ontario Human Rights Tribunal will hear the case this summer.

Mac cloner for all: Dell does that too! They have software that comes with their laptops and is restricted to ONLY their laptops. Their CD’s do not install on other brands.

Why is no one fighting Dell on this issue (other than the problems people have with Dell and their service and their equipment) at least on principle?

It’s offtopic for this post, but is not for this site, so, I am posting this here. Here is what I got from Justin Beach on Facebook:

Canadians have until February 16 to weigh in on Net Neutrality. If you already know what that is visit

and let the CRTC know what you think. If you’re not sure what Net Neutrality is visit

I would also like to refer you to this RFC by Vint Cerf, called “The Internet is For Everyone”.

If it is too hard to put your idea together, RFC 3271 may help you.
