Linux-loaded PCs?
p2pnet.net News:- Dell to Offer Linux-Loaded PCs in Europe, said Forbes.
Not, said Dell.
In fact, “Dell today distanced itself from system builder Questar’s announcement yesterday that it is offering Linux-based Dell-manufactured desktop systems – and doing so with the PC giant’s approval,” says a report in The Register here, going on:
“It also branded elements of Questar’s announcement – issued, it says, ‘without Dell input’ – as ‘inaccurate’.”
But, “Our agreement with Dell allows our customers to purchase high-quality Linux computers with an exceptional Dell service warranty,” David Orban, Questar’s ceo says in the story. “By joining forces, we’re both able to forge new commercial frontiers in Europe and offer top-value Linux solutions and support to our customers.”
Lindows – whoops, Linspire – ceo Michael Robertson was, “understandably enthusiastic,” says a PC Pro story here which also quotes him as saying, “I believe that it’s a notable event when the largest OEM in the world agrees to ship a new desktop Linux product.”
Questar has an agreement with Dell to market computers with Linspire pre-installed, shipped by Dell to end-users, says the report, adding:
“Dell will claim that is isn’t the one selling desktop Linux, Questar is. The company still recommends Windows XP on its website. However, Dell will doubtless be looking at the sales progress of the Linspire loaded Optiplexs with some interest.”
