CRTC new media hearings live online
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- The CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission) is to take its, “first concentrated look at new media in almost ten years,” says Broadcast Magazine.
“New developments are coming to the worlds of TV, radio and the Internet, and the content and context of new media in Canada will radically change as a result,” it says.
But don’t get too excited. If the CRTC’s performance with new media is anything like that of its performance with existing ones, it’ll be a dismal showing.
“Public hearings on the Future of New Media in Canada`s Broadcasting Landscape begin next week, and they will look at the role new media plays within the overall Canadian broadcasting.”
Public hearings are also slated for the CRTC Net Neutrality hearing, now reportedly moved from its original date of February 16 to the 23rd, following representations from the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, and the Open Internet Coalition.
Except under the chairmanship of Konrad von Finklestein, they’re not public.
The CRTC had ordered major telcoms such as Bell Canada and Rogers Communications to provide information after an earlier request from the Canadian Association of Internet Providers (CAIP) and consumer groups.”
But although statistics will be publicly revealed, the companies behind them can hide in the dark, identified only as Company A, Company B, etc.
Don’t like the look of that? Then say so.
SaveOurNet.ca has a petition all ready for you. And Click here for the CRTC ‘Notice of consultation and hearing’.
However, situation looks to be considerably more open for Canadian Broadcasting in New Media.
Beginning February 17, CPAC provides will provide coverage of the CRTC hearings, “using both traditional and new media platforms”.
It would, of course, be very much in the public interest to have the Net Neutrality hearings broadcast live online, on television and by radio.
But Bell Canada, et al, wouldn’t like that. So it isn’t going to happen.

Where can I find this document? Even without individual names, I imagine it would be an interesting read, and useful for preparing a submission to the CRTC. One that will, of course, be very carefully read and considered by everyone who gets to have input on net neutrality

I think there is some confusion here.
The Internet Traffic Management hearings have long been scheduled for July 6, 2009. What has been moved from February 16 to 23 is the deadline for initial public comment. You can get the full schedule, which was published back in November, here, and the updated deadline for initial public comment here. I would be very surprised if transcripts, Webcasting, etc. were not provided for the Internet Traffic Management hearing.
Joel, the Notice of Public Hearing for the Broadcasting in New Media hearing was published in October here; see also public comments here. (Note that the Broadcasting in New Media is not just about Internet access.)
