Harper, Obama: a chemical romance?
p2pnet news view | Politics:- This week Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper is slated to meet the new US president, Barack Obama, on his first official out of country trip – to Canada.
What does their ‘historic’ get-together portend?
George W. Bush and US entertainment factions had Harper well under control and now, will Harper and Obama also become bosom buddies?
Good question. But what their handlers can’t do, “is engineer personal chemistry, however much they might try,” says the Toronto Star, continuing:
“It’s the wild-card ingredient that has political watchers on both sides of the border wondering as the two leaders ready for their first meeting, a working lunch in Ottawa on Thursday designed to turn a brave new page in Canada-U.S. relations.”
However, it may not be too difficult. After all, the two leaders have more in common than pundits might think.
The corporate music industry already has Canada well and truly in its grip, as does Hollywood. And things are looking similarly promising – from the perspective of the entertainment cartels, that is – in the US with Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG’s RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) now virtually running the US Department of Injustice, as it might be known these days.
Indeed, an American student threatened to kill herself because she wasn’t able to measure up to the very reasonable requirements of the RIAA, the benevolent ‘trade’ organisation which exists to promote fair play between the music industry and the people who keep it alive.
It could be that if Harper and Obama can see eye to eye, Canadians, too, may be blessed with an arrangement under which the Canadian government may ramp up existing arrangements to assist Hollywood and the Big 4 labels in encouraging Canadians to buy corporate product.
If nothing else, Harper and Obama can swap tales of which Hollywood stars they’re friends with, and whether or not they’ll ever be lucky enough to have lunch with Miley Cyrus.
But wait! Obama’s kids have already done that, haven’t they?
Meanwhile, chemistry matters.
In fact, “It is the extra ingredient, that extra 10 or 15 per cent that can take the relationship from satisfactory to extraordinary,” the Toronto Star has Gordon Giffin, “who saw firsthand the famously good vibes develop between Bill Clinton and Jean Chrétien” when he was US ambassador to Canada, saying.
“You can’t manufacture chemistry – it either exists or it doesn’t. And the fact is, Bill Clinton just loved Chrétien.”
So will Obama and Harper enjoy a similar chemical romance?
Stay tuned.

Harper will have his head buried so far up Obama’s ass that when Harper responds to reporters, obama will have to unzip for harper to be heard.
