p2pnet news view RIAA | MPAA News:- “Things may be far worse for Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMGs universally despised RIAA than we’d hoped for (sorry, expected),” p2pnet reported recently, citing RIAA staff firings.
So naturally, we were wondering how things are going over at the Big Music extortion unit’s brother organisation in La La Land.

MPAA to scale back budget, staff – Entertainment News …
3 Mar 2009 … The dire economy has hit even the industry’s chief lobbying arm, the Motion Picture Assn. of America, which has been forced to scale back … www.variety.com/article/VR1118000774.html?categoryid=3284 –
Thus, Hollywood’s MPAA is to also suffer attrition (if it hasn’t already) with The Big Question Mark hanging over the head of current boss Dan ‘The Joker’ Glickman.
After all, his contract does end this year.
But not to worry. He’ll still be around, says the Hollywood Reporter. “Member studios cut more than $20 million from the MPAA budget this year, forcing broad staff and program reductions in a series of steps expected to permanently reduce the scope and size of the six-member studio group.
“Separately, the MPAA board is expected to announce soon a contract extension through summer 2010 for CEO Dan Glickman, who was rebuffed in a bid for a new multiyear pact. His current contract expires in June.”

Meanwhile, each of the member studios tends to have one or more MPAA priorities, which might not be shared by the entire MPAA board. That makes it tough to get action items approved for implementation.
“The studio CEOs view the MPAA as a place where things go to die,” a source lamented.

Still, though Glickman always had a hard act to follow in taking over from the iconic Valenti, he seems to lack broad support among studio chiefs.
“Dan spent almost all of 2008 trying to get some clarification about whether he was going to be re-upped,” a key source said.
“That says everything you need to know about the relationship.”
Says Variety
Glickman declined to specify the number of layoffs, but the org has made cuts from its communications staff and has realigned its international piracy operations. The MPAA has about 160 employees and 40 internationally via the MPA.

“We have got to do more with less, and that is what we are going to do.”
Warner Bros. chairman-CEO Barry Meyer said, “I wouldn’t interpret this as a redefining of the MPAA. If anything, we would like a laser-like focus on … particular issues.”
Universal Studios prexy-chief operating officer Ron Meyer said the cutbacks are “reflective of every part of our industry.”
“The MPAA is not in jeopardy,” he said. “I think it is a very, very viable organization. They continue to protect our critical agendas, and they protect our interests in Washington and around the world.”
Stay tuned.

2 things jump out at me here, the first is…..
“The studio CEOs view the MPAA as a place where things go to die,” a source lamented.
Dont we wish they would all crawl off and DIE??
the second is…….
“I think it is a very, very viable organization. They continue to protect our critical agendas, and they protect our interests in Washington and around the world.”
Protecting their interests in Washington, ie: greasing the palms of government officials!!
No way the buying/consuming public can get a fair shake here.
