Net campaign urges action over move to block websites Irish Times

An online campaign to protest against moves to block access to certain websites by Irish internet service providers (ISPs) gets under way tomorrow. Blackout Ireland is encouraging Irish internet users to contact their service providers, TDs and Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan to voice their opposition to the planned restrictions which are being spearheaded by the Irish Recorded Music Association (Irma). Internet users are also being asked to black out their profile pictures on social networking sites such as Twitter, Bebo, Facebook and MySpace for a week to show support for the campaign.

Another DPI Ad Firm Sued DSLreports

Back in November, NebuAD and several of the ISPs who were doing business with them (Embarq, WOW, Centurytel and Cable One) were sued over their plan to sell subscriber browsing histories without giving customers a functional opt-out mechanism……Now a less well known company with a similar business model named Adzilla is facing a similar lawsuit in California, along with sixteen unnamed “John Doe” ISPs. Like NebuAD, Adzilla paid ISPs to install deep packet inspection hardware on their network to track which websites users visited (and for how long). The Borings Eloquently Appeal The Street View Ruling, Declaring: Google, Don’t Tread On Me Tech Dirt

Last month, a court totally dismissed the lawsuit filed by Aaron and Christine Boring, who had complained about Google’s Street View images of their home, suggesting that the company had driven onto their private driveway to get the photos. The court pointed out, correctly, that the Borings had no case because they could have availed themselves of the simple mechanism on Google to remove the images. Still, the Borings are now appealing, and turning this into quite the epic battle of small guy vs. big company:

Guess Who Facebook’s Just Sued For Spam? Tech Dirt

Last year, when MySpace won an uncollectable judgment against well-known spammer Stanford “Spamford” Wallace, part of the punishment was that he wasn’t allowed to set up any more MySpace profiles. Mike noted at the time that it didn’t say anything about Facebook, speculating that’s where Spamford might pop up next. So guess who Facebook’s just sued for sending spam Facebook messages? Yep, ol’ Spamford and a couple of his pals.

Internet auction fraudster jailed BBC

A man who faked his own death after conning eBay customers out of £23,500 worth of goods they did not receive has been jailed for two years. Jason Hart, 33, from Moorside Avenue in Farnworth, Greater Manchester, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud and perjury at Bolton Crown Court. The court heard how he called a local newspaper claiming to be his father, to say his son had died in a house fire. But Hart was alive and trying to put off customers he had deceived. The court heard how he took money from at least 28 buyers – but the goods were never delivered.
