Stanford and Duke, core Apple stalwarts

p2pnet news view | Mobiles:- Two of America’s Best known and most senior universities, Stanford and Duke, have enhanced their roles as premier core Apple backers.

In October, 2005,  Stanford, “unashamedly admitted doing a deal which in effect turned the university into an Apple iTunes promotional outfit,” said p2pnet.

“Not only is it foisting iTunes, a hard-core commercial product, onto students, it’s bragging about it, even publicly linking its name to the product in a url,” p2pnet posted. “And were that not enough, its alumni association will tout the ‘service’ during its annual reunion homecoming weekend …”

While other universities were, “now using iTunes to distribute class-specific content to their students,” including Duke, Drexel University’s School of Education and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, “Stanford is the first to make a substantial amount of recorded university events available to the public at large,” said Forbes

And by way of a taste of other efforts on behalf of Steve Jobs & Co, “iPhone Application Programming – Marcos/Doll – TTh 12:50-2:05 – Packard 101,” we posted in August last year, quoting a Stanford syllabus, and going on:

“The university is unabashedly offering iPhone programming. But no surprises, really. Stanford … is, after all, Apple-land, enjoying a warm and cozy relationship with the company.

Then a month ago, “Stanford University recently unveiled a free iPhone application that ties into the university’s student-registration system and offers a range of services for students on the go,” says Wired Campus, continuing:

“Soon the service will let students call up a campus map that shows the current locations of other students in the area who also have iPhones (and who have granted permission for the service to spot them).

Development of the application was led by two students. But they weren’t just doing the job for fun: “Stanford commissioned the software from the students’ software company, Terriblyclever Design.”

‘One-time innovative technology purposes’

In 2004,  “not only is Duke marketing iPods and iTunes (Big Music ‘product’, in other words) for Apple, it’s paying Apple for the privilege with, ’strategic planning funds that it has set aside for one-time innovative technology purposes’,” p2pnet reported.

Said Duke: “The total cost of the project is expected to reach $500,000 or more, which includes hiring an academic computing specialist for the project, grant funding for faculty, associated research costs and the purchase of the iPods.”

To add insult to injury, “Duke is also using a site modelled on the Apple iTunes page,” we said.

“Duke University will distribute Apple iPods to its incoming freshmen, as part of an initiative to encourage creative uses of technology in education and campus life,” said the school.

Now, “Duke University has become the latest institution to join the mobile-application arms race, announcing today the release of ‘DukeMobile,’ a suite of programs for students who use the iPhone and iPod Touch,” says Wired Campus.

The applications weren’t actually designed by Duke students, though, says the story. They were developed by Terriblyclever Design, the company run by Stanford students.

“Among other functions, the software allows users to watch Duke content on YouTube and iTunes,” says the story.

Uses can also, “look through the university’s course catalog, and pinpoint the location of campus events on a searchable map.”

But Apple is getting it all its own way.

“By March 30, those using Blackberrys with multi-touch capabilities will also be able to use the software,” the story says, adding:

“Similar software bundles have been developed at other campuses, including the University of Cincinnati and University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.”
