RIAA: addicted to suing

p2pnet news view | RIAA News:- The RIAA was, “criticized last week for continuing to sue P2P file traders, despite claims that they were turning the page on such heavy-handed tactics,” says Karl Bode on dslreports, continuing »»»

While some might simply call this dumb, Ars Technica hunts for a more complicated answer, asking three sources why the RIAA is still in court and getting three answers. One entertainment industry attorney argues that the RIAA doesn’t want to drop cases en masse because it could anger the courts and hurt future cases. The EFF argues that the RIAA simply doesn’t want to admit error. The RIAA? They say it’s about fairness:

“We’re obviously pleased to transition to a new program going forward but that doesn’t mean we can give a free pass to those who downloaded music illegally in the past,” (says RIAA Spokesperson Jonathan Lamy). “How fair would it be to the thousands of individuals who took responsibility for their actions and settled their case while others are let off the hook? We’re still in the business of deterrence and it must be credible.”

“Nothing quite says credibility like filing thousands of suits against your customers based on flimsy or non-existent evidence, then claiming you’ll stop doing so — only to continue the cases in the name of fairness,” Karl adds.

Indeed.

If you go to lawyer and have money, the lawyer will sue anyone, to get your money surely, and to get the other fellow’s money too, without the client suspecting. It’s done under the nose of a judge, who is also a lawyer and used to do the same thing as a lawyer. A perfectly legal scam.

Feel sorry for RIAA, being the primary (and stupid and stubborn) victims, the big losers in the scam. Of course, some RIAA executives may be getting some of the cash back from the lawyers. If in doubt, read about the Wall Street and the Bush lawyers.

I just robed Garry Shitman so it is not fair if I don’t rob also Lamy!

    I love the logic!

    1. If that’s the “business of deterrence”, then, wow….real smart, and well thought-out (not.)
They’ve “deterred” an entire generation of teens, most everybody who’s a real music fan, anybody interested in technological innovation, Internet-freedom advocates, public-domain advocates, etc. etc. at nauseum — from ever respecting, trusting, or valuing what they do ever again.

Nice one, RIAA — sue yourselves into oblivion! :)

Get well soon, Jon — Malaria? That sounds fun (smirk) :)

What world does this guy live in? he might as well have said “We want to continue with our extortion scheme by scaring old ladies and kids. We have gathered money, and we like it, so we will continue until the last penny is extracted”…. If this is the case, than sue Harvard students.

Me to I have sun glasses and look mean!

    Ha!
