694,000 illegal downloads as you read this
p2pnet news view MPAA | RIAA News:- Did you know if you’re one in a million in China, there are 1,300 people just like you (whatever that means)?
Or there are about 540,000 words in the English language?
Or by 2013, a supercomputer will be built that exceeds the computational capabilities of the human brain?
Or, during the course of the YouTube propaganda presentation posted as genuine and factual, last year from the look of it, 275 babies were born in China?
No?
Then you probably didn’t know 694,000 songs were downloaded illegally, either.
heh
The video was, of course, made by one or other of those good corporate citizens, the RIAA or MPAA, as a public service.
Did you also know the stats contained therein are repeated over and over again, ad infinitum, without ever changing?
Does that seem familiar?
And did you know both organisations are full of shit?
(Thanks, Byron)

Jon, Jon. Now the statistics wouldn’t change, would they. The video is in the present so it is all happening WHILE YOU WATCH IT as it says.
Tsk, tsk. You really must try to be more accurate.
March 11th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Ohhh! I see. Every 4:55 minutes of every day, 275 babies are born in China, 694,000 songs are downloaded illegally, and so on.
Got it.
Thanks so much for straightening me out.
Cheers!

“The video was, of course, made one or other of those good corporate citizens, the RIAA or MPAA, as a public service.”
@Byron:
Google’s still your friend ya know!
(Well, at least the search engine part of it still works, I mean.)
Karl Fisch, Scott McLeod, and Jeff Bronman are teachers and bloggers.
“Do You Know” is apparently something Karl puts out every now and then.
Some of the statistics these people compile are quite interesting, such as…
Did you know… laying off coffee for a day often increases your attention span by a factor of 23?
Did you know… paying better attention to a presentation often prevents you from looking like a complete idiot.
: )
March 11th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
As for the part about 694,000 songs being downloaded every 5 minutes, I’d have to say that’s certainly possible, given a global scale.
As for the part about these songs being “illegally downloaded”… I’d say Karl and the bunch need to start researching that topic before stating it as a “fact”.

Statistics are always thrown around to make a conversation more official or to cover up the underlying BS or to show some sort of research or study has been done, for example did you know that:
100% of babies are non smokers
100% or babies are really really young
100% of males have a penis (also interesting, 100% of females dont!)
100% of gay marriages the person marries the same sex
in 100% of hetro marriages 50% of the people getting married are male, and here’s the shocking part… the other 50% are female!
100% of people who can hear are not deaf
etc etc
some lesser known statistics:
99.9% of people who work at the RIAA are total scumbags (0.01 percent of error)
of the above figure more than 70% are pedo’s and bestiality loving low life sobs
and of the above 70% more than 60% have considered selling their parents or were molested by their parents as children
of the above 60% more than 50% pray to the devil,
of the above 50% more than 40% feel up their own children,
of the above 40% more than 30% have given and received oral sex from Cary Sherman,
of the above 30% more than 20% eat animal droppings,
of the above 20% more than 10% swap their wives
etc
..
Cheers!

@ DA:
Byron is a good friend of mine – lives here on Vancouver Island – and he sent me the url not because he thought I’d take it seriously, but quite the opposite. (http://www.p2pnet.net/story/18047)

“The video was, of course, made one or other of those good corporate citizens, the RIAA or MPAA, as a public service.”
The preceding statement was made in the post…no disclaimer, no hint of satire.
What part of this sentence was I not paying attention to, again??!
[shakes head]
“Don’t make me come over there!”

Re: */story/18047
That is funny!
Has nothing to with anything we’re talking about, but it’s funny.

The RIAA and MPAA as “good corporate citizens” preceded by “heh” didn’t ring even a tiny bell?

Bloody wierd, that. I posted M&M quite a while back – and you have the url – but it’s vanished. Now I have to do it all over again, including formatting.
DAMN!
Cheers!

@Jon:
“The RIAA and MPAA as “good corporate citizens” preceded by “heh” didn’t ring even a tiny bell?”
Sorry, I don’t think it was written properly, if it was supposed to be “in fun”.
I read it again, and again, and I just don’t see it. The implication was far too vague, in the midst of all the other “quotes” from a fact-based video.
You want the reference to be clearer?…
Say something like, “You’d think this video was made by our good friends…”
The way it is just makes the reader think you’re saying the MAFIAA did make it, as you continue with “the stats are repeated ad infinitum…” and “…both organizations are full of shit.”
(Not that those 2 statements are untrue in any way…!)

i wonder if someone made a psa about the riaa and mpaa with facts and stats and uploaded it to say you tube, how long it would take before it was removed
March 12th, 2009 at 9:08 am
I have one too:
100% of the IPFI bosses claimed under oath in sweden last month that 100% of this illegal downloads would have been bought if only they were not illegally available!
Imagine how crazy someone must be if he truly believes THAT?! (or not crazy, but simply a lier that lies undr oath?) Maybe the only true statement was that his wife is the person in charge in their marriage!?

To paraphrase mark Twain, there are lies, there are damned lies, and
then there are MAFIAA piracy statistics.
March 12th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
There is no such thing as an illegal download!
Everyone should repeat this someone else at least once a day.
“Yes, I’ve said this before…. that’s the friggin’ POINT!”
March 12th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
@Devil’s Advocate Says:
There is such a thing as an illegal download in the UK..Uploading and making a copy of copyrighted works (without the copyright owners consent) is illegal.
Just my 2 pence worth.
March 12th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
” Uploading and making a copy of copyrighted works (without the copyright owners consent) ”
That’s not a download .. is it
That would be an ‘Upload’, as you said yourself.
That’s the making available argument that have never been able to prove, and
so far a court hasn’t made them prove it.

You’re the only one that can’t grasp the concept.
You’re still wrong.
Cite the law you reference.
March 13th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
There is NO law against downloading.
…The deprogramming continues…
March 14th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
All i was saying was, i dont know what the laws are in Canada or U.S. There maybe no actual law against downloading but in the UK to make a copy of someone elses work that it protected by copytight is illegal unless you have the copyright holders consent. Is this the same in Canada?….Im sure it is. By downloading something you are making a copy. Am i right?…. I am not saying Im whiter than white as i have over 1TB’s worth of films on my hard drives. None of which i have the copyright holders consent. lol.
What makes me laugh though is when i read things like this…’There is no law against..?????….It depends what country you reside in. Whats legal in one country is illegal in another.
March 14th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
” There maybe no actual law against downloading but in the UK to make a copy of someone elses work that it protected by copytight is illegal unless you have the copyright holders consent. ”
Ok,
Cite the relevant law in your country.
Or, I am sure there are other UK readers who know and could CITE the relevant text.
Unless you can cite the actual LAW involved, all you have is opinion and conjecture.
What is the legal citation to your claim.
March 14th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
@pig…
In other words, you THINK there’s a law about it somewhere on the planet.
FACT: There is NONE.
Don’t worry, there are literally millions of people like yourself, who have been “primed” over the years by the Content Industry’s propaganda and “educated” by those who have a vested interest in seeing you believe it. This is why we need to really step up the reprogramming campaign – it’s gotten to a point where the lies are hurting EVERYTHING.
