Google guy takes over at AOL

p2pnet news view | Advertising:- IOut, ex-AOL boss Randy Falco. In, ex-Google guy Tim Armstrong.

That’s the news after the, “beleaguered web giant decided to shake up its top management,” says The Guardian.

The New York-based web company which, says the story, “has been struggling for success in recent years,” is also bidding farewell to AOL chief operating officer Ron Grant who “will also leave as a result of Armstrong’s appointment”.

Dow Jones has  Time Warner chairman and CEO

Jeff Bewkes, in announcing the appointment of Armstrong, a Google senior vice president, specifically touted his influence in building Google’s online search advertising platform.
He’s “the right executive to move AOL to the next phase of its evolution,” according to Bewkes.

“AOL has struggled to rebuild its brand for years,” says Online Media Daily, adding:

Time Warner has focused on developing AOL’s advertising business, but Armstrong will focus on getting the business ready to spin off from Time Warner as a stand-alone business or merged with another search engine such as Google, Microsoft, or Yahoo. “Clearly AOL decided they need a sales superstar and figured the chances of selling AOL to Google with Tim at the helm go way up,” said Kevin Lee, chairman and CEO at Didit, and Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) chair.

The move threatens to, “mark a significant change in the terrain of the web industry,” says The Guardian.

“Over the past year there has been increasing speculation that other internet companies, including Yahoo and Microsoft, were considering a deal with AOL to buy all or part of its business,” it states.

But, “one expert said that this could drag the company further away from such a deal. Not only does Armstrong have a background with Google, but the Californian internet company has a 5% stake in AOL, which it bought for $1bn (£718m) in 2005.”
