Canadian P2P file sharers buy more music
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- Canadian file sharers are more likely to buy music and attend live performances than others, says an Angus Reid Strategies poll.
We’re split on the subject of file sharing, but, “45 percent of those surveyed said that downloading music was simply people doing what they should be able to on the Internet and 27% said that they shouldn’t do it but that it is not a big deal,” states Michael Geist.
Only 3% think file sharers are, “criminals who should be punished by law”.
The poll found downloading still exceeds paid downloads [big surprise], but, “those downloading were also more likely to buy a CD (41 percent to 34 percent for non-downloaders),” says Geist.
Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music, however, claim file sharers would have otherwise have bought a given song: that files shared equal sales lost.
The Big 4 used the same assertion to institute a nationwide sue ‘em all campaign in the US, and would like to do the same in Canada.
But recently, “It is a basic principle of economics that as price increases, demand decreases,” wrote US federal judge James P. Jones.
“Customers who download music and movies for free would not necessarily spend money to acquire the same product.”
File sharers are also more likely to have attended a concert in the past year (65 percent to 52 percent for non-downloaders) , says the poll.
Meanwhile, another Angus Reid survey found Canadians are against proposed new ISP levies for new media content creation and for file sharing, says Geist, going on, “80 percent of people surveyed said that a possible new CRTC levy on ISPs to pay for Canadian new media content creation was unnecessary and/or inappropriate.
“In a second survey, 73 percent of respondents said that an ISP levy to compensate for file sharing was unnecessary and/or inappropriate.”

And now I have another tip for you
Who’s Scalping Those Concert Tickets? Artists And Agents, Frequently
The Wall Street Journal reported today that for many big name concert events, the people behind a good deal of the really expensive secondary market tickets are the artists themselves, along with their agents and promoters. Recent concerts where the artists and promoters resold tickets on the secondary market and split the profits with Ticketmaster include Neil Diamond, Bon Jovi, Celine Dion, Van Halen, Billy Joel, Elton John, and possibly Britney Spears.

and again you ask me why we should have ANY sympathy for these people
it isn’t art its a business and that in any business a symptom of overpricing and being out of touch wiht a customer is that they go elsewhere for the product.
Piracy isn’t OUR problem its there’s. When you over price it to death , make it a crime and such you only create a underground market cause when you think you have it under control those real counterfeiters will be making a killing and you will not gt a dime.
perhaps we should be making it law that counterfeit levis be allowed, after all if they can make the same pear a jeans for 1 3rd the price who am i being a capitalist to argue with that price.
what we are seeing is the last ditch attempt of having no more wars to fight.
no more propganda will work.
so they are trying to shut down the messenger.
Because i am the message.
