Symantec shock-horror kids online report!

p2pnet news view Security | Kids & Kartels:- Security firm Symantec has found a way to use British children to promote and market ‘product’.
“For the second year, Symantec commissioned the Norton Online Living Report to provide insight into rapidly changing technology, Internet usage and the social impact on individuals and families,” it says.
Symantec owns Norton.
When it, “comes to the eternal worry – do you know where your kids are?” — it asks. And the answer is, of course, not always. In fact, “Parents are in the dark, with kids reporting spending nearly twice as much time online as their parents think,” it says.
Not only but also, “The worldwide survey also found that a whopping 99 percent of online adults say they have taken steps to secure their personal information online, yet unsafe surfing, dangerous habits and hacked computers are alarmingly common,” it states in mock-horror.
“Nearly half of online adults knowingly visit un-trusted Web sites, don’t back up their data and use unsafe passwords. About a third report someone trying to hack into their computer.”
And guess what?
“Despite the fact that 99 percent of online adults feel they take steps to be secure, this year’s report found that many consumers are not fully protected as they flirt, share and make friends online.”
Not fully protected! Say it ain’t SO!
But that’s the case, says Symantec, and, “Even more troubling, about two in 10 online adults worldwide don’t use any security software at all,” says the company, coincidentally a maker of security software.
And the mainstream media are reporting this as though it’s a genuine news release.

The antivirus companies may possibly be under gag order from the governments so that they don’t recognize malware planted by police or other government agents (Magic Lantern comes to mind). A similar gag order could come from Sony, so that they do not recognize their malware too.
Don’t trust the antivirus companies too much, practice safe computing yourself. Work as a regular user WITHOUT admin rights, do not install arbitrary software from arbitrary sites, avoid using Microsoft products whenever possible. Working without admin rights will stop nearly all software from infecting your computer (but it will still let the software infect your user profile)

being in the IT consulting industry, i usually recommend people AVOID norton like the plague, so much better protection out there that is a fraction of the cost if not free, and always inform the customer that the best antivirus solution is education in knowing what you are actually doing online/downloading/etc, altho now a days even just visiting a regular non-threatening site can pull in an infected add, but again, there are cheap/free safeguards against it, best way to sum up norton tho “how do you uninstall norton?” “Reinstall windows”

Norton is basically malware, the cost of it protecting your system is equal to if not greater than the cost of your computing experience.
if you want a stable computer and wish to pay for AV, switch to another solution, I personally use Kaspersky and love it.
But as others have already stated, don’t put all your trust in your AV. Stuff can still get in and in all truth knowledgeable and responsible computing practices will beat any AV.

Stay away from Norton, I have seen it destroy many computers with its so call protection.

We use Norton at work since it only costs 64 dollars to renew each year for a 50 user license. It works great for us here. The only problems people have is with the XP Antivirus malware. For whatever reason it never catches that.
