p2pnet.net News:- Having almost missed the boat with Britain’s AIM (Association of Independent Music), Apple is apparently now close to signing on the dotted line.
And if the deal goes through, supporters of Apple’s iTunes will have the privilege of paying £0.79 (close to $1.50) a track for music from such as Basement Jaxx, Lemon Jelly, Carla Bruni “and hundreds of other artists”.
Referring to the iTunes launch in Europe, “Many companies were only approached to participate over the last few days and independent label communities across Europe including France’s UPFI, Germany’s VUT and Sweden’s SOM have had little correspondence with Apple,” said Aim.
Now, however, “A pact could be announced as early as today, sources close to the talks have told The Times, ending a feud that has kept independent labels off iTunes since its launch in the UK, France and Germany last month,” says the online newspaper here, going on:
“The new deal is expected to ease the concerns of independent record labels that they would be locked into long-term contracts at fixed prices. The percentage cut that they receive from songs sold over iTunes is also expected to be closer to the rates received by multinational record companies such as EMI and Sony Music.
Royalties paid by Apple for iTunes sales are understood to range between 45 and 60% of the retail price, says The Times, adding:
The dispute “triggered a brief war of words, with the independent companies accusing Apple of being two-faced, and Steve Jobs, Apple’s billionaire chief executive, calling the labels ‘mean and nasty’.”
