Australian censor plan a ‘dead parrot’

p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- Australian dictator Kevin Rudd has received another virtual slap in the face.

He and his ruling Labour Party are trying to force an online censorship policy down the throats of Australians, 90% of whom don’t want to know, according to a recent study.

Using Kiddie Porn, the old RIAA / MPAA standby, as his excuse, he wants the net to be filtered for what he and party faithful consider to be disagreeable content.

A blacklist of supposed offenders has been created to help them along.

But, “Leaders of Australia, you have been warned,” says the voice-over on a YouTube video posted by Anonymous (or a facsimile thereof).

“The faceless masses that exist without borders on an Internet will rise against you in support of your citizens which you try to restrain.”

Adds the mechanised voice, “We are anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget.”

Now, “Australia’s third largest internet service provider has dealt the Rudd Government’s plans for a mandatory internet filter another blow only days after a top-secret blacklist of banned web pages was leaked,” says Australian IT, going on:

“IiNet yesterday pulled out of the federal Government’s internet filtering trials, blaming drawn-out negotiations with the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, constant changes in policy, and last week’s leak of a secret internet blacklist.

“Chief executive Michael Malone said iiNet only agreed to participate in the trial to demonstrate that the filter was flawed and a waste of taxpayers’ money, but last week’s blacklist leak was the final straw. ‘To use Conroy’s own words, the internet filter is now a dead parrot and there’s no point investing any time or money in this,’ Mr Malone said.”

Not only but also, Australian acitivist group GetUp has launched a campaign it expects will drive another nail in the censorship coffin.

It says it’s looking for creative ideas to produce a TV ad that will turn up the heat on our campaign to Save the Net, it says, stating:

“Script ideas, images, music, video content or just a good pun – your brainwave could end up on national TV!

“We’ll turn the best ideas into a TV advertising campaign ready to hit the airwaves in April. Submit your ideas!

Banned sites revealed

Wikileaks, which published what it says was the Australian black list and which went down because of the demand, is now back online.

“The leaked list, understood to have been obtained from an internet filtering software maker, contains 2395 sites. ACMA said its blacklist, as at November last year, contained 1370 sites.

Stay tuned.
