New cellphone contract? Don’t sign

p2pnet news view | Mobiles:- Canadians should wait a year before signing up for new cellphone deals.

So says the SeaBoard Group, quoted by the CBC.

Many companies that won spectrum from last year’s wireless airwave auction have yet to announce launch dates and pricing plans and new offerings should bring more competition and lead to better value for consumers, says SeaBoard in the story.

“Friends don’t let friends sign wireless contracts — at least for a year or so,” it said in its The Shape of the Market to Come report, mentioning in particular the arrival of two of new carriers Public Mobile — formerly BMV Holdings — and Globalive Communications Inc.

“Both companies have made public statements suggesting they will launch discount brands with unlimited talk-and-text for $40 a month,” says the CBC, going on »»»

Public Mobile, backed by several private equity firms, has said it plans to launch a $40 unlimited talk-and-text service in Ontario and Quebec late in the third quarter of 2009.

Toronto-based Globalive has said it plans to launch two brands, a discount phone under the Yak brand with a price target of $40 a month and a yet to be named core brand, but has only said it plans to launch a countrywide network — with the exception of Quebec — by the end of 2009.

The SeaBoard report said the $40 monthly price is similar to the plans offered by Fido, Solo and Koodo, the incumbent discount brands of Rogers Communications Inc., Bell Canada Inc. and Telus Corp., respectively.

Fudzilla puts it like this »»»

The Canadian mobile market is legendary for being over priced and as user friendly as a Great White Shark with a personality disorder. Rodgers was so nasty to users when it scored Apple’s iPhone that even the great Fruit themed Messiah Steve Jobs thought they were being a bit nasty to consumers. Apple was reported to have redirected phones from Canada to Europe because it did not want to suffer too much bad publicity when people looked in detail at their restrictive and expensive Rogers contracts.
It also notes the Public Mobile and Globalive plans are similar to those offered by Fido, Solo and Koodo, run by Rogers Communications , Bell Canada and Telus.
“The difference is that they are full unlimited services that include ‘everything’ on the menu, while the older telcos have contracts that charge you for every cough and spit,” it says.
Stay tuned.

  1. ddbann/David Says:

a year is a long time to wait IF you REALLY need a cell phone

  2. Reader's Write Says:

When my last cell phone broke, I purposely just bought a new cheap compatible outright instead of a “free” one I would have got had I wanted to sign up for another 3 years. Finally I can free myself of rogers stupid contract/price structure, 1 more year!
