SeeqPod files for bankruptcy protection
p2pnet news view Music: | Advertising:- SeeqPod as been having trouble staying alive and in one of its attempts to breathed life into the operation, it started offering its Targeted Crawling system with built in APIs at $5,000 a pop.
But that clearly hasn’t worked and now it’s filed a petition for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, says TechCrunch.
The company is, “evidently doing this out of fear about the outcome of the multibillion dollar lawsuits it was slapped with by music labels like Warner Music, Capitol Records and EMI,” says the story, adding:
“We reported earlier that SeeqPod has become quite the target of the music industry, which went so far as going after developers who merely leveraged the SeeqPod API. They silenced Songbeat and forced Streamzy to put itself up for sale on eBay as a result.
“SeeqPod has developed interesting and powerful technology that is able to quickly crawl the web for playable media (MP3s, slideshow presentations, videos, etc.) and enables users to play it on-site. It doesn’t actually host any files on its servers, but the downside of the technology from a legal point of view is that the crawling engine picks up pirated music files from across the Web too, which is why the music labels are so eager to sue the company behind the service, especially since it spawned so many third-party services which use the engine as the basis of their online offerings.”
Warner Music Group claims SeeqPod engages in “direct, contributory and vicarious infringement” .
According to Warner, Seeqpod is, “liable for making available on-demand and unauthorized digital public performances,” said Billboard, going on:
“WMG also claims Seeqpod is using music to build up a large enough user base to start selling advertising, without compensating the label its use.”
It also, “recently released an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch, allowing users to place an icon on their main screen that directly connects to the service and allows them to stream tracks from the various sources,” says the story.
On its site, “We are passionate about search and discovery algorithms and believe that one day, everything on the Web will need to be ‘playable’,” says Seeqpod.
Stay tuned.
